Speeding is probably the most common driving behavior that is employed. Speeding over the limit on a road or highway is probably one of the most common laws broken in the United States. While searching the net one can find an abundant amount of information on this particular subject. The net has just about every aspect of speeding you can imagine, from how to avoid paying speeding tickets, to how to succesfully speed without getting caught.
Why do people speed? According to a report on the web called the speed related argument data base, the reason why people drive 15 miles over the speed limit is because it's to low. The report argues that places that raised the limit to 15 miles over had a small affect on drivers speed, and that accidents were reduced. The same point was also given by the research document Effects of Raising and Lowering Speed Limits, by the U.S. department of transportation federal highway administation. According to the research done the report states that raising or lowering the speed limit by 20 miles had no effect on the increase of speeds or accidents. The report also imply's that the reason people speed is because drivers are just following the flow of traffic. I totally agree with both of these reports, especially the statement about drivers following the flow of trafffic. I often find myself speeding up on an empty highway especially when the cars around me are going fast.
Not everyone agrees with speeding, P.A.S.T, Parents Against Speeding Teens think that speeding is extremely dangerous especially for teenagers who are no t as experienced in the ways of driving. This particular group wants to make stricter laws for teen drivers pertaining to speeding. The teens who violate the speeding laws would aquire license supension, and have to go to a safe drivers class. I must agree with Some of what this group is saying. Some teenage drivers can be irresponsible and dangerous when speeding. A good example of this would be the many deaths and accidents accounted to teenagers racing on public streets. Many teenagers also like to show off while driving. However I believe that a warning should be given for the first offenses, and then suspension for the following offenses. Perhaps intergrating traffic psychology in drivers education in high schools could teach these kids resposibility as well as the mechanics of driving.
The web sights I visited had valid arguments for and against speeding. My personal feeling is that it should be okay to speed. People will speed wether or not there is a speed limit enforced. However I do believe there should be a speed limit enforced in certain areas and times, for example during school, and during certain weather conditions for safety purposes. I think if people are responsible and cautious, speeding is really not a bad deed.
