Topic Focus
(S 1.) Topic Focus is a register modality mechanism, which suggests that its discussion will relate the way in which ES Outlines contract into topic glossaries, on the one hand, with topic function, on the other, Since the latter relates display repertoire to the management of transactions, the issues involved in the discussion on topic focus can be projected as follows:
(a) What constitutes the setting features of a social event? This will be discussed in conjunction with the register modality operation of setting coordinates (cf. graphing);
(b)What are the parameters of topic focus selectivity? This will be discussed in conjunction with the recognition of contention points and the latification of their standardized .
(c) How do participants use topic focus mechanisms so as to serve their pragmatic involvements in a social event? This will be discussed in conjunction with the establishment of reputation or the reconstruction of an individual biographical record; these define the parameters or dimensions of topic focus dynamics: cf. role type, assertion type, modulation type.
(d) How do participants ratify each others topic focus selection displays? This will be discussed in conjunction with our proposal for The Scientific Bible the cataloguing activities of the intellectual ruling class revealed through ethnosemantic probes into the specialized topic domains of the North American Register (cf. the New Three Rs --- Reciprocally Ratifiable Recognitions, our proposal for the reorganization of the School Curriculum into instructional topic glossaries to replace the current topic nominals created haphazardly by courses, curricula, and textbooks).
(S 2.) A social event is specifiable as a natural system fully defined by its ehnosemantic postulates. The formal correspondence in geometry for the reification of social event is given by the mathematical operation of graphing a space. Topic Domains are fragmented labeled intersections that specify the organizational structure of topic nominals and their derivation (see Notes on Display Repertoire). Topic nominals specify the derivation of situated assertions or comments contributed by participants in a particular social event. The comment is the basic unit of display repertoire. Thus, the specification of the natural phenomenon of a social event amounts to the derivation of the interactional displays that constitute its visible, ratifiable, and defining parameters.
The minimal sufficient set of defining parameters that reify a social event can be listed as follows:
(1) The boundary markers that isolate the phenomenon of a singular social event; these are called setting coordinates.
(2) The localization of contention points through the operation of standardized meta-topical mechanisms called assertion and argument operators.
(3) The resolution of contention points through ritualized ratification procedures (cf. transactional remedy) that characterize ethnicity or particular group membership; the resolution of contention points is specified formally by the derivation of topic nominals, cf. topic intersection operator: see Notes on Display Repertoire).
(4) The strategic modulation of paraphrastic sets of functionally equivalent topic nominals, i.e. style of display modulation; (allows the derivation of role type and transactional engineering).
(5) The specification of a ritualized consensual pre-established signaling system for the identification of reciprocally ratifiable recognitions the Three Rs. The Three Rs constitute the pool of display repertoire individually acquired by participants (cf. standardization, socialization, enculturation, group assimilation, socio-function). The Three Rs allow the derivation of singular records as consensually validated documentary evidence of the actuality or reality of the social event (cf. memory, identity, biography, evidence, fact, episode, truth value, authenticity).
In summary, then, the 5 defining parameters of a social event are:
Each of these will now be discussed in turn.
(S 3.) Setting coordinates belong to the class of forman objects of which other members include arguments, role types, topic domains, themes, records; these are called pragmatic contraction sets and are empirically derivable through specification of interactional contingencies displayed by participants in a particular ethnic membership configuration (or social group). Thus, though pragmatic contraction sets are derivationally open (and are, therefore, formally alike to neologic topic nominals), they behave situationally in restricted dimensions (and are, therefore, functionally alike to deictic topic nominals and meta-topical elements which are fixed or closed). Therefore the setting coordinates delimiting a social event are pragmatically ordered into a list of precedence called the circle normalcy list.
The specific identification of such precedence lists is accomplished by members of a group through assimilation contingencies governed by pragmatic considerations (cf. daily round, see Notes on Constitutive Exchanges). These group assimilation procedures are external setting coordinates for the social event. The derivation of the external setting coordinates is accomplished by enlarging the delimitations of the original social event to include them. Since this is an iterative process, it can be appreciated that setting coordinates form ordered interlocking matrices which in their aggregate characterize cultural locals (or milieus, atmospheres, spaces). Diagramatically, we have the following expressions:
(i)
Delimitation of Setting Setting
Singular Social = Internal + External
Event Coordinates Coordinates
(ii)
Setting Reciprocally Circle
Internal = Ratifiable = Normalcy
Coordinates Recognitions List
(iii)
Setting Setting
External = Internal for enlarged
Coordinates Coordinates social event
(iv)
Cultural Setting Setting
Locale = Internal + External
Coordinates Coordinates
Delimitation Cultural
of Singular = Locale
Social Event
[S 4] Cultural locales are empirically derived clusters of setting coordinates. They are identified by labeled deictic topic nominals.
Consider this list:
Record of Event Locale of Event
Hurting my toe (falling in the bathtub)
Thinking about the roast (left in the oven)
Returning the book (to the library)
Falling in love (with Joan)
Telling the story (of the Wandering Jew)
Returning home (unexpectedly)
Experiencing it (in my youth)
Cultural Revolution (in China)
Listening to teacher (in school)
Shopping (in the supermarket)
etc. etc.
The relationships illustrated here are given by the following expressions:

Deriving Setting Argument Setting

a Social Event Coordinates Coordinates
The rationale for the equivalencies in expressions specified on the accompanying chart and involving topic nominals, complements, assertions, and arguments, are fully given elsewhere (see Notes on Display Repertoire).
The implications of the chart will now be elaborated.
[S 5] Expression (viii) reveals that the operation of singular reference (viz. deriving a record for a social event) is accomplished by the argument, which is the smallest independent unit of display repertoire (cf. transaction, exchange, paragraph, title; see Notes on Display Repertoire). Setting internal coordinates amounts to derivation of comment nominal or record of event. Setting external coordinates amounts to derivation of comment complement or locale of event. Therefore, situated assertions or comments, that are ratified by participants as singular references, constitute a display record in the form of a topic nominal, whose intersecting derivation specifies the internal setting coordinates of the event recorded and referred to. This topic nominal is related to a topic complement, called the comment complement through an argument operator. The derivation of this topic complement amounts to a specification of external setting coordinates or locale of the event. Singular references (or the derivation of a record of event) is related to contention points, the second defining parameter of social events. This will now be elaborated.
[S6] There is a formal relationship between topic intersection operators and the derivation of contention points in a cultural locale. A cultural locale is specified by setting coordinates. Setting coordinates are derived topic nominals. The structure of topic nominals is specified by the operation of topic intersection operators. (Topic intersection operators belong to the class of objects called meta-topical elements, which also include assertion operators, argument operators, and anchor concepts. Topic intersection operators are fixed in form and number (cf. function words and morphophonemic elements). What is the motivation for topic intersection?
The solution we propose is the labeling of the intersection between setting coordinates as the contention point. The contention point is thus the origin of situated assertions. In other words, we can say that the motivation for topic intersection is to raise contention points. The minimal structure of a contention point is defined as the single social event, and is the minimal unit of cultural behavior (cf. recognition).
Diagramatically:
Internal THE TOPOLOGY
Setting OF SITUATED
Coordinate DISPLAYS (i.e. EVENTS)
Contention Point External Setting Coordinate
In other words, setting the internal coordinates (i.e., recognizing or noticing something; making a record of a social event) is intersected by setting the external coordinates (i.e. contextualizing it; commenting; arguing; intersecting topic nominals; locale of event) at a point, the contention point, which defines the intersection as a situated display:
Contention = Recognition + Reconstruction
The topology of situated displays specifies the pragmatic contracted sets of contention points that characterize the topical dimensionality of ethnic groups (color, sophistication, cultural premises, richness). It allows the derivation of records of cultural behavior:
THE TOPOLOGY
Comment OF SITUATED
Nominal ARGUMENTS (i.e. RECORDS)
Argument
Operator Comment Complement
In other words, deriving a comment nominal (i.e. making a singular reference) is intersected by the comment complement (i.e. relating it to the locale; contextualizing it) at a point, the argument operator which defines the interaction as a situated argument or record:
Record = Singular + Specification
Reference of locale
The topology of situated arguments specifies the pragmatic contracted sets of arguments that characterize the topical dimensionality of role type. It allows the derivation of individual comments:
THE TOPOLOGY OF
Topic SITUATED ASSERTIONS
Nominal (i.e. COMMENTS)
Topic
Intersection
Operator Topic Complement
In other words, deriving a topic nominal (i.e. fragmentint minimal topic nominals or anchor concepts) is intersected again by the topic complement (i.e. another topic fragment to which it is related functionally by the topic intersection operator --- which is the minimal definition of making a situated assertion or comment. The topology of situated assertions specifies the pragmatic contracted set of topic intersection operators that characterize the singular references of an individual. It allows the derivation of topic focus change, which amounts to a description of an event or social account. (An account is defined as the reconstruction of a social event. See Notes on Practical Understanding).
