Part 1: Survey the entire cyberspace on Internet and the World Wide Web, looking for documents, activities, or programs that might be part of a Cyberspace Collection on Traffic Psychology. Present your results in the form of an annotated bibliography of links. That is, a title (which is also a hotlink) is presented with an explanation of why you think it might be of interest to a traffic psychology curriculum. Present a minimum of 10 titles and their annotations.
Hint: Use your bookmark as you travel around, then copy link addresses with the mouse. Be sure to try all your links!
Hint: Use WebCrawler for WWW and Veronica for Gopher. You'll probably find more information on the Gopher. Use boolean searching with truncation for best results. Warning: the information you want may not be under such obvious titles as "traffic" "driving" or "transportation" but may require digging into all sorts of documents or activites that YOU BELIEVE MIGHT BE OF USE to a traffic psychology curriculum, broadly defined.

Part 1 Describe how you find information in a hypertext environment such as our course files. Focus on these items:

In so far as you feel comfortable doing, give details on your reasoning processes, your goals, and your reactions. For example:

Part 2: Make 5 new additions to your glossary.html file. At this stage, you ought to have a total of 10 entries. Update the earlier entries by adding new explanations -- NOT deleting old ones (so that we can see the progression in your understanding of a concept).

Second, go to your labreport.html file and type in your comment, making sure you add an anchor and a link to the student's file and anchor. ((HINT: use Control-z to get out and fg to get back -- instead of quitting and starting.)
Include at least 4 students in your 6 new links for this week.
Remember to ask the person to include a link to your paragraph.
Part 2: Go to the instructor's article that analyzes the lab reports of a previous generation. Read it and find 3 places (as marked by the anchors) to comment on.

Psych 409 Homework for Week 10:
Part 1: Complete the construction of three alternate Home Pages as follows:
Standard: Links arranged in some order, each with a brief explanation. See the instructor's Home Page.
Indexical: Links arranged as in a directory or index of topics. There are no explanations. Gopher menus and many Web pages have this format. A useful type of indexical Home Page is one that lists the many topics WITHIN documents, with hot links to those anchors. Wouldn't that be real useful?
Artistic: Links arranged in an ideosyncratic manner to express the owner's aesthetic and performative interests or involvements. See for example my Alternate Home Pagewhich is still under construction.
I suggest you surf around the Web to examine other people's Home Pages. Which of the three types is most common? Which ones do you prefer and why? Keep notes of ideas you like. Here you can look at the Home Pages of 1500 people. Enjoy them! You can also check out the famous Yahoo list.
Part 2: In your labreport.html file describe your experience with Home Pages on the WWW:
a) What was the size of your sample? How did you make navigation choices?

Philosophy of Home Page Architecture
I find that Home Pages are always under construction for those owners who are personally involved. Constructing Home Pages on the World Wide Web is an exciting activity! Just think: you have the world at your finger tips. Because you determine what the browser sees and has access to, you are acting like a virtual god -- building a cyberspace architecture through virtual pathways to people's minds. For a discussion on First Amendment rights in cyberspace you may want to check out this opinion.

Each of the 3 types of Home Page can contain 4 types of links:
A) sequential (direct)
B) reciprocal (mutual)
C) circular (recursive)
D) central (pivotal)

When you combine the 3 types of Home Page with the 4 types of Links, you obtain the following 3x4 matrix of Home Page Links:

Principles of Cyberspace Architecture
for Virtual Learning Communities

1. The more links are created in a hypertext super-document, the richer it is culturally (i.e., in terms of ethnolinguistics, sociolingusitics, and psycholinguistics analyses).
2. The size of a cyberspace nook or area can be measured in terms of megabyte-links. For example, the projected size of this cyberspace learning community at the end of the first generation will be:
15 x 50 x 40 = 30,000 megabyte-links
15 = about megabytes of text in the super-document
50 = average number of links in each student's document
40 = number of students in the first generation
3. The growth of cyberspace is organic. As the number of interconnecting links increases, the cyberspace develops further. The analysis of the cyberspace yields data on naturally occurring virtual learning communities of interest to the fields of psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and ethnolinguistics.
4. Cyberspace is a representative model of the mental world, which means the spiritual world.
Psychological Characteristics of Hypertext Links
From the psychological perspective, hypertext links in a virtual super-document created by members of a cyberspace learning community have three characteristics: affective, cognitive, and sensorimotor.
A link is a communicative act by which a member of the community transmits new information or new meaning by connecting two independent ideas which have not been related before. Links in a virtual learning community are thus motivated actions or behaviors responding to members' wishes to exchange and communicate their mental life to each other.
The affective feature of links refers to their motivation. It answers the question, Why the link was created, or, What was the person's purpose for putting a link there.
The cognitive feature of links refers to their argument or implication. It answers the question, What new information or knowledge is being created through the link, or, What is the new idea that is communicated by the link.
The sensorimotor feature of links refers to their location and appearance. It answers the question, How the links was created, or, What is its physical appearance.
The study and analysis of linkage structure is the study and analysis of communicative acts in cyberspace by members of a virtual learning community. It is the natural history of culture (ethnography), language (ethnolingusitics, sociolingusitcs, and psycholinguistics), and behavior (social psychology).

Three students have sent me e-mail crying with frustration: the CSS server in Porteus won't accept their login names. I am sorry for you guys! Of course I wired e-mail to our webmaster god Eric Hagen and I am hoping he will be able to do it today (1/26/95). Maybe the four of us should walk over to Porteus 339 and wait while he is checking and fixing the directories! O.K., let's do it! ***********
Well we did...but unfortunately no one was there, so we left sheepishly (the seven of us) being contented with leaving a message. However, Tod Takitani stayed around hunting for the Webmaster. Did he succeed?

"I followed the instructions given, but was unable to create the file. I was not asked to save after control x and control c. Is that because I > must have typed a document in the file first, or should I be able to > label a file without a document?
Trudy, I believe you were using Mac. Another fellow had the same problem. He was not given a choice to save after entering C-c C-x which told him C-c DEL We got around it by entering C-z after seeing the DEL. And no, you do not have to enter anything into the file to save it. (Or at least others didn't.)

Jill, It is very frustrating to do your work and not see it through to completion. Take heart though, it is quite possible that you did everything you were supposed to do...and it did not work. This does not I repeat - THIS DOES NOT EQUATE TO YOU HAVING SCREWED UP. If you can, do a paradigm shift and, rather than thinking that you screwed up or that the machine screwed up, think of what happened, what was supposed to happen, and what needs to be done to reconcile the two.
Jill, I need more specifics to help you. Next time tell me what you were trying to do, what you did exactly, and what the error message or other indication was. If I am not mistaken, you created your kane.html using the instructions to go to telnet, open www.soc.hawaii.edu, login and at the www$: prompt use emacs to create the file. Then you went to lynx, possibly the css home page, etc. and found the Students Home Page and at that point you could not open your page. Well, I can't open mine either! I think part of the path (contrib) needs to be up-dated. I am not sure, and I am checking it out. Best thing to do is to go back to www$: lynx kane.html and see if those commands get you in.

Try opening up the student lab reports -- several of those already work (e.g., the winners of the awards below). Just keep trying the pages all week and you'll be able to see more of them each time.
