Affective= feelings,motives.
Cognitve= thoughts,choices.
Sensorimotor= execution,sensations.
GCVLC= generational cyberspace virtual learning community.
Email= an electronic mail system that lets you send and receive mail from anyone on the same system.
Unix= a communications system that houses email and other programs. See Nicole Gustie"s glossary for more.
Pine= the program that UH uses to run email.
Address Book= option in pine that allows you to assign a nickname to a frequently used address. When this nickname is typed in at the "to" prompt, it automatically types in the correct name and address.
Log on= what you do to access a program or system.
Password= a secret 6 digit code that allows you and only you to access your email files. Also enables you to get into the systems at UH.
Navigation= what you do when you explore files. Can be done by using links.
Links= enables you to link on to another file through your own file. Assists a navigator to navigate through the cyberspace. A short cut for traveling on directory highways.
Cyberspace= the name given to the computer space in which you are in. Carol Alamares and Delia Badua have more to add.
CD-Rom= compact disk read only memory. Holds roughly 600 times as much data as a standard computer floppy disk.
Database= information or files stored in a computer for subsequent retrieval and use.
Download= when you transfer information from
a computer network to your personal computer. Lets you access files from
systems like the Web.

Fax= a black and white reproduction of a document or picture that is transmitted over a telephone or oter transmission system.
Hardware= the programs and files that run in the equipment.
Html= Hyper Text Markup Language. The language used in hypermedia. This allows users to access related works or images from a single computer screen. This is what we are using. It allows us to to make links and anchors. This type of interface is similar to normal human cognitive processes.
Internet= a system that links smaller computers and allows the user to communicate with other users on a global scale.
Modem= used to link a computer to a phone line. Helps users that are logged on at home, to be hooked up to the system here at UH. Beverly Diaz and Grant Harada have more to add.
Network= the circuits over which computers are
linked to one another.

Anchor= this allows others to link into your file at a certain place instead of at the top of the file.
Worldwide Web= internet service that lets users retrieve information from various sites. Often called "the web". It is one of the most popular internet services.
Tariff= the published rate for a service, equipment, or facility established by the communications common carrier.
Upload= transfers information from a personal computer into a computer network, where others can use it.
On-Line= when you are connected to a network, and are actively exchanging data.
Address= file name used in making links. Where file is located within the directory. Also known as a URL( Universal Resource Locator ).

BBS= Bulletin Board System. This allows users with a modem to post notices or comments for others to read. Very poular, although I haven't really seen or used one.
Bandwith= The capacity of a cable, fiber-optic, or copper-wire network, usually expressed in bits per second. The higher the bandwith, the more users it can support.
Baud= Used to measure the speed of a modem, being replaced by bps(bits per second). Barry Kwock has more to add.
Boot= What you do to start a computer. Also referred to as re-booting, which is what you do after shutting down a computer to get rid of bugs that have been bothering you in a session.
Flame= An insulting message recieved either on a BBS or through e-mail.
Gigabyte= A billon bytes, which is enough to hold 1,250 copies of Moby Dick.
Hacker= A skilled programmer who is able to access files of others without their permission. See movie entitled Sneakers.

IRC= Internet Relay Chat. Allows users to talk to each other simultaneously. Sort of like using the telephone. This can be accomplished through unix also by typing in "talk" and the user id of the person you want to talk to. If they are on the system, they can respond.
Lurker= Someone who just reads other peoples' comments but never posts his own. Usually found in newsgroups or bulletin boards.
Netscape= Very popular software that allows a user to browse the Web. This is the software that we use at UH. Very graphical, check it out!!
MUD= Multi User Dungeon. Used in computer games fashioned after Dungeons and Dragons.

Newbie= What I would be called. It is used to refer to someone who is new to the cyberspace community. This is not a very flattering name to be called.
Posting= What you call a message that you put on a bulletin board.
ROTFL= An acronym for Rolling On The Floor Laughing. What you would use following a funny remark. Other useful acronyms are: IMHO (In My Humble Opinion) and FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).
Spam= Used to refer to junk mail or garbage that has been posted or sent via e-mail. Those ads for "free money" were spam!!!! Not a good term for Hawaii though, seeing as how locals don't feel the same way about spam that the mainlanders do.
Surfing= My soon to be favorite pastime. A leisurely approach to exploring the internet. Usually done by following whatever link interests you. Be prepared to lose track of time while surfing. My sessions have been known to take up hours upon hours.
Userid= This is what you use to logon. It is a unique id that you choose. It is what or who you want to be known as.

Uncertainty Principal= The affective symptoms of uncertainty, confusion, and frustration are associated with vague, unclear thoughts about a topic or question. In other words, the way affective and cognitve processes are related to each other in respect to the uncertainty of things.
