The following page contains a brief history of the development of the Internet.

1964 - First concept of the Internet was introduced. Rand network displayed to survive the nuclear attack.

1969 - Department of Defense Commission ARPANET(decentralize network)

1970's - ETHERNET developed by Xerox; provided the basis for network areas for land.

1971 - There were 50 nodes.

1973 - First international APANET (England and Norway)

1979 - USENET was used at Duke University

1981 - BITNET (Because It's Time Network) begins at City University - New York

1983 - ARPANET splits into TCP/IP; developed in California

1984 - Number of hosts surpasses 1,000

1985 - ARPANET, BITNET, ETHERNET unite together as Internet

1986 - The National Science Foundation creates NSFNET; its purpose was to give grants. The number of hosts surpasses 10,000.

1987 - NSFNET signs up with IBM, MCI to upgrade NSFNET.

1989 - The number of hosts surpasses 10,000. Archie is developed in Quebec.

1990 - ARPANET is decommissioned. Initial WWW is discerned. In Europe, work is done in CERN which allows user to selent links; multimedia hypercard.

1991 - Gopher starts World Wide Area Server. President George Bush sign High Performance Act

1992 - The number of hosts surpasses over 1,000,000. The University of Nevada develops Veronica. Clinton plans to develop infastructure NREN. Internet servers is chartered.

1993 - The number of hosts surpasses 2,000,000. NSF release plans to resturcture Internet. Internet goes commercial, COREN. Internet talk radio begins broadcasting. Government documents are available on Internet. National Information Act introduced in the House passes. White House receives e-mail.

1995 - The number of hosts surpasses 4,800,000.
