- IRC-An Internet Relay Chat. From my
understanding, this is like a room where people can meet and converse, on the internet. I was wrong, but I'm still not clear on what this is..yet...

Archie-A service on the internet that allows you to
search a database of information. What that information consists of, I
don't know, yet...

Online-Connected to another computer

HTML-A language used in documents on the web, that tells the computer how to format the text and that allows for links.

Newsgroup-A group of people with a common interest. I'm not sure though whether they meet on the net, or just e-mail eachother.

Shareware-Software that you can download for free. But if you decide that you want to continue to use it, you must mail the developer the fee.

Download-Receiving a file.

Upload=sending a file.

Filename Extension - A code at the end of a file name that has been compressed, indicating which program was used to compress it, telling you which program to use to decompress it.

Veronica-A program that searches a database of Gopher servers. See Trudy Moore's definition. Also similar to Jughead.

Server-A machine that makes things available on the a network. (still unsure)

Baud Rate-The speed at which the information travels from one machine to another via a modem ,which Beverly Diaz has a great definition of.

AOL -Acronym for America On Line. A set up similar to the Internet, but with less things. People with AOL can send and receive e-mail to those on the Net, can FTP and some other things, but do not have Web access.

Mirror Site -An FTP site that has exactly the same things as somewhere else. This makes it so that the original site is not slowed down by too many people accessing it.

.sea - This is placed at the end of a filename to show that it is a self-extracting file. (For Mac users). See filename extension.

Stuffit - A mac program that unpacks (uncompresses) files ending in .sit.

Self-extracting - When you double click on it, it decompresses itself.

Compression -Making the file smaller (less K).

Thread - The topic of the conversation.

Man Pages - These are similar to pages of a manual. You can access many of these at the unix prompt. Just type man <whatever instructions you want>.

X-modem, Y-modem, Z-modem - File transfer protocols.

Protocol - A language the computers use when talking to eachother.

HTTP - Hypertext Transport Protocol - The protocol used by the Web.

Finger - A program that gives you information about other people on the Net.

Attachments - Files that are linked to e-mail.

uudecode - A unix program for decoding files that
have been uuencoded.

Usenet - A network of discussion groups.
- Archive Site - A site on the Web that offers software, compressed for downloading.
