Comments Week 6

I was reading through Shane's Week 6 Comments, and in his San Diego Report Comments
he recommends that something like the San Diego Report be implemented in Honolulu. I agree with Shane because, when there is a backlog of traffic on the H1 or 2, it a mess. If we would be able to check the traffic and the road conditiond ahead of time, we would be able to chose alternate routes to our destination. The helicopter reports given on the radia are not available all the time. If you miss one report, you would have to wait for the next. If I can recall correctly the reports are given every half an hour during rush hour traffic. What about those who do not have a radio in their car?! They wouldn't be able to keep up to date, or change routes when on the road already when an accident occurs. So, if Honolulu had a system where we could check the traffic and construction going on, we would be able to get to places much faster and be happier people.

No Brakes
If we were able to check the construction on the Likelike town bound, I would be able to save alot of wear and tear on my brakes, sitting on an uphill road. For the past couple of weeks, the construction of H-3, is causing traffic to those heading for town on the Likelike. For people like me who sometimes leave my house in Kaneohe, to head to the airport for work get stuck in traffic. Yes, believe it or not, traffic at 10am. I wish I could just drive on the Likelike, without having to use my brakes. Meaning drive with no traffic. The only time I really get to drive on the Likelike without having to get stuck in traffic is late at night. You only can stare at the green scenary, so many times before you get frustrated. I often tell my friends that the traffic or time it takes to get over the Likelike or Pali is good. But I never bothered to ttell them about being stuck in raffic. I guess that beats looking at other drivers, in cars that you want to be in on the H-1 or 2. So if I had access to the road conditions, I would save time and avoid frustration, by being able to find out if the Pali or Likelike is the easier one to use when heading out of Kaneohe.

After reading Carol's homework for week 6 Traffic in Honolulu
, I knew that I was not the only who thought that the traffic in Honolulu is getting worst. I agree with Carol, that it doesn't seem like anyone is trying to make the traffic and road conditions better. You hear everyone grumbling all the time about the traffic and roads, but no one ever does anything about it. Does everyone have to make a big issue, or go to the media for the City and County, to implement something to relieve the traffic congestion? Perhaps our leaders should take a look at other alternatives regarding traffic, before deciding to spend the millions of $$$$ that the state doesn't have to build Mass Transit. Now come on, Do you think people are actually going to give up driving their own cars? I don't think so.

Bus-ing it
Prime example, me. When I lived by Punahou, I could of easily caught the bust to and from school. This would save me money and time, as well as the grief of having to find parking. I caught the bus only two time last semester. I hated it. It never came when I was at the bus stop. I am speaking from experience. I used to catch the bus to and from Kaneohe to Mid Pac during high school. Once I got my car there was no turning back.

Bicycling
Looking through Kendall's reportBiker Friendly
, I realized that I have a fear of riding bicycles in Hawaii. I guess it is because of all the accidents you hear about involving bicyclists, pedestrians, and reckless driving. I used to always ride my bicycle in Japan. Don't ask me how I did it, but I did. The streets are smaller, there are more cyclists, and mothers riding with three kids on their bicycles. No joke! I think that if the input of cyclists are considered in the future planning of roads, highways etc, as well as adjusting the existing roads to make it safe for the cyclists, would actually encourage more persons to ride their bike. That's why there is alot of traffic, becuase the thousands of people like me, who have the fear of being hit by a car when on a bike, choose to drive. Being in a car gives me security next to a bicycle.

Any comments?
