Lab Report 1b
One of the Generational Curriculum reports I had, did a comparison
on individual and collective cultures. In regards to driving, most
drivers think as individuals. This means that most drivers give priority to
their own needs, which are demonstrated through their driving. Many
drivers tend to think and drive like they are the only ones on the road.
They fail to see driving as a group activity, and that one person's careless
actions influence and affect others around them. For example, an accident
resulting from speeding in the early morning traffic, affects thousands
of drivers, that are on the road nd about to go on the road. The accident
calls for more time needing to be alloted to get to one's destination, as
well as in preparation in getting their. Many individuals tend to care
less about the welfare of others, and ignore the fact that their
careless mistake, while driving in the worst scenario, could take the life of
another person.
I agree with this report, because every action of a driver on the road
does affect everyone else. Why should people go on the road and drive with
the fear of getting into an accident, because of someone else's carelessness?
We, as drivers, should take the time out to be courteous and cautious
drivers, not only to avoid headaches and problems for yourself, but for
others as well. Perhaps if more of the harmful results, statistics, reaction
and comments from victims, and those affected by another person's careless
driving, were publicized more, we could make all drivers think and change
their driving style and habits for the better.
Another topic discussed was conformity. Most people tend to
conform their driving, to avoid tickets, accidents, and higher insurance rates.
Of course their are individuals who conform, without really believing or
agreeing with what we are doing, which is compliance. People's compliance
and conformity levels are influenced by the actions, and reactions of
others. Group pressure and acceptance are some factors that influence
driving of individuals. The ego and the desire to fit in, and retain
a particular social image, can produce outrageous reasons, in the
justification of careless driving.
I can really relate to this topic, because I do conform my driving,
most of the times for the wrong reasons. Depending on my mood and time
schedule, my driving changes. If a am in no rush to get anywhere, my driving
is law abiding. But if I am grouchy, tired, or late, my driving tends to
become dangerous. I start tailing people, making remarks about the other
drivers ability to drive, and have the tendency to honk my horn more often.
I think alot of people do comply with the driving laws regarding speeding,
but sometimes disagree with them without publicly showing it through their
driving. I guess many people have this kind of attitude, because they
justify speeding by taking into consideration the small chance of getting
busted by the police, and the amount of cars on the road, while speeding.
Overall, I feel that a traffic psychology course requirement before
getting your license, is a good way to stop, bad driving habits, before
they get a chance to devlop. It will also decrease the number of
careless accidents and speeding tickets. I also think that drivers
would be more cautious, aware, and caring about their driving, and
they effects they have on others.
