Note #62 (Hit by Car)

I do a lot of driving around town and at work and
like most people, there are times in which I speed to
meet a deadline or to keep an appointment. But, there are
occasions in which I realize I am driving too fast and
slow down. I keep thinking to myself, "What if I hit
someone walking across the street? What if I hit a kid
that runs out between cars? How could I live with myself?

How do people live with themselves say after they accident-
aly hit and kill a child? The vision and thought send
chills up my spine. Is there anyone out there who has hit
someone with their car? How did you deal with it?

People need to slow down, its not worth killing someone.

i've hit two living things; a person and a deer. i felt
pretty bad both times, but actually worse about the deer.

the person was a guy who just ran out in front of my car
in campustown at night. i wasn't speeding; i was in fact
going slower than the speed limit because campustown is
notorious for stupid people crossing the street without
looking. he fell, but got right back up and continued
running -- it actually looked like he was running from
somebody. tried to find him, but to no avail. i figure
if he could continue to run as he did, he wasn't badly
hurt. i felt bad for hitting him (i won't forget the
sound it made), but i didn't feel guilty, since i had
really not done anything at all wrong.

the deer i hit because some idiot with a pickup was tail-
gating me, and i had no choice but to either hit the deer
or let the idiot hit me. i regret i didn't choose the
latter, but there wasn't a heck of a lot of time to choose,
and i thought i might be able to avoid the deer; it was a

matter of inches. i hit it on its left haunch, and it
stumbled and ran on. i don't doubt from the damage on my
car that it was hurt badly. i got a neighbor with his
tracking dog and we tried to find it, but no luck. i feel
lousy about this because the animal had to suffer. i should
have hit the brakes and let the idiot hit my car instead; he
would have been responsible for the damage and it might have
taught him a lesson about tailgating.

My ex-girlfriend hit a pregnant woman and killed
her unborn child.
It was late at night and she was driving down a dark
highway when something appeared out of nowhere. She said
it all happened so fast she didn't know what was going on.
She too said she remembered the sound, a horrible 'Thud!'
As it turned out, this lady was all whacked out on
crack and was going out to buy some more, and was so
desperate she didn't notice the car. She lived but her
baby died. It took months before my ex-girlfriend would
drive a car again and to this day (three years later) she
still will not drive at night.

Beware driverz.

I feel so guilty, very very guilty. last night after work
i went home and tried to parallel park across the street
from our house or maybe a little bit far. But then i got
too close to the car infront of me and i hit the bumper.
i panicked and drove off and parked in another place. i
don't know who owns the car. my side light is broken but
my parents wouldn't know because it's an old car. what
if somebody saw me or what if they find out. i'm scared.
last night i couldn't sleep and i haven't told anybody
but you. well, i'll see what happens.......

dont worry youll forget about it. Same thing happened
to me but i was leaving and accidentally backed into
the car behind me. i drove back a couple times
to check the damage, was minor and i forgot about it
in a few days.

11/30/92 8:07 am jack palance did you check the car for dents? If there aren't any
don't worry about it.............

I hit a car once (black nissan 320) and I was honest about
it, so I left the owner a note. I ended up paying $500
for repairs. Only thing though was that there were
witnesses who took down my license plate, so if I didn't
leave the note, I'd be in jail for a hit and run.....

Hey, I wouldn't sweat it. I was backing my car out
of my garage one day and I tapped the front bumper of
this car parked across my house. As luck would have it,
there was even a witness(some dude on a Harley who
parked nearby to put on his helmet!)
But he was cool about the whole thing. I got out of my
car to survey the damage, but there wasn't anything
noticeable. I asked the Harley-dude if I should report
it, but he said "he didn't see a thing."
If no damage can be seen on the other car, well, so
what? I guess nothing happened...

Well, I can understand how you feel. It happened to me
once and I've regretted it since (also in a parking lot).
I think it's good to have regrets and feel guilty about
things you've done to hurt others out of cowardice. I
don't think you should just forget about it. Keep thinking
about it over the years, and see how this experience will
serve to imporve you as a person. Only then will your deed
be forgiven and you will be redeemed. Hope to see you
in heaven...
