Instructions for the Book Review Report
409a, 409b, 459--Spring 2002--G16
Dr. Leon James, Instructor

Start by making some notes that answer the following questions about the book you are reviewing. Do not put these questions into your report.

  1. What are the book's topics? Identify the major topics and define each in your own words (do not forget to define them or explain them).

  2. In what way are the book's topics (as you identified them) relevant to public concern today? Do the media play a role in this topic? (To answer this question go to search engine google.com and type in various key topics from your book.)

  3. Is this message needed in our society today, in your opinion? Why is it important? What broad concerns does it answer?

  4. What are the specific problems this book discusses and what are the solutions offered?

  5. Does the book have exercises or tests? If yes, describe them. Take those exercises and report on how you did, what you learned. For what is this part of the book useful?

  6. Are there literature reviews? Bibliography? End notes? Index?

  7. What topics in the book are related to health or stress? In what way?

  8. How is the book related to the spin cycle theory in report1 and report2? Why do you think this book was chosen for this class?

  9. Considering your background as a psych major, where does this book fit?

  10. What did you enjoy about this book?  Quote one or two passages you found worthwhile. Explain why.

  11. What did you learn from this book?

  12. What were the strengths and weaknesses of this book? For each give an explanation and justification.

  13. What other reviews have you found of this book or topic on the Web? Give the links.

  14. Who should read this book? What audiences and why.

  15. Add any other questions or points you might think of yourself

Keep your notes with the answers for each question. You will need them when revising or improving your book review answers. You will need at least one paragraph for answering each question adequately, sometimes more.

When you're ready to type your draft report, organize the notes into meaningful sections, and give each section its own sub-title of your own choosing. Do NOT put the questions in your review.

Use your own organization and sub-titles for each section.

Note on your paragraphs: ALL PARAGRAPHS must be separated by a blank line.

When your draft is done go over it with the questions listed above to make sure you covered every one adequately.

It is strongly recommended that you (a) read other people's book reviews when the COMPLETE drafts are up, and then make changes to your draft before you upload the FINAL version (due date is April 1, 2, and 4, for the three courses, respectively).

Note: the file name for your book review MUST be called   bookreview.html (or .htm) This is the file you must upload. Due date for the COMPELTE draft is March 18, 19, and 21, for the three classes, respectively.

The book review file MUST show this heading at the top of the screen:

A Review of

Author, Title, Publisher, Date

by Student's Name or Pseudonym and Date Posted

Instructions for this Report

Note: the address for this link to the instructions is:

Type in the Page Properties (File Menu, Save as... Web or HTML) and fill in the field as: A Review of Author, Title by Student's Name or Pseudonym, University of Hawaii, Dr. Leon James, Instructor

(you need to fill out the correct information for author, student)

Be sure to put two return signs after EACH paragraph so you end up with a blank line between them (improves readibility).

Be sure none of your paragraphs is longer than two-thirds of a screen (just put a double return to break them up).

Do not underline sub-titles--they look like links that way (you can use italics or ALL CAPS).

Be sure you don't forget the link to the instructions at the top of the file.

Be sure you have a link at the bottom of your report:  Back to My Home Page

Here some good book reviews that will show you how some G16 students have carried out the above instructions:
