And Weekly Research Report Form
Fall 2002--Generation 17
Dr. Leon James, Instructor

  (1) The Forum Discussions are at this address:    www.hern.hawaii.edu/webx
You must start posting any time during the week of September 9.

(2) The first time you log on, click on Register and use any password you like. Remember this password. After that, click on Login.

You may use a pseudonym or your real name. If you use a pseudonym it should be the same for all your reports.

(3) Once you log in, select "UH Courses," then "Fall  2002," then "Psychology 409 and 459, Dr. James"

(3) You need to post 2 messages each week starting the week of September 9. To get your full points you need to post every week and only on the topics specified below. If you miss posting a week, you must make it up immediately the week after by posting double.

(4) You can always check the total number of your postings by clicking on your name where you post.

(5) The first message you post each week is a "comment message" in which you give a reaction comment to a research topic message posted by other students from any of the three classes.

Please specifiy on the first line that "This is my comment message to so-and-so's messageon xx topic." Put a blank line (two returns) between this line and the rest of the paragraph.

(6) The second message you post each week is a "research topic" message. The first line of your message should specify: "This is my research topic on xx topic." Be sure to give the Web address of the site you are discussing. Put a blank line (two returns) between this line and the rest of the paragraph.

Describe:

(a) what you searched for, where, and what you found or failed to find.

(b) Mention one or two things that you found intriguing or worthwhile to note.

(c) Mention any problems you've had in searching. Mention the search engine or other way you found it. Type in the Web address of the site.

(7) The "research topic" must be about one of the approved topics for the Annotated Bibliography Report. The instructions for that report are accessible here:
www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/leonpsy17/g17bibliography.html

They are:

(a) How do people deal with sick pets or pets that get old and no longer function normally.

(b) What are the differences between men and women in how they handle relationships.

(c) What do people do while driving and what are the consequences. Examples include, but are not limited to: eating, talking on the phone, listening to music, partying, fighting, etc.

(d) How and when do people express rage in their normal daily settings. Examples include, but are not limited to: workplace, home, sports, games, crimes, portrayals on TV, novels, etc.

(e) What are the forms of spirituality in our society today? Examples include, but are not limited to: religions, lifestyles, disciplines, belief systems, etc., all relating themselves to spirituality or God.

(8) To post your research topic comment, you FIRST need to spend a few minutes  doing some searching on the Web or some library facility on the Web. This way you'll be able to have something to discuss in your research topic comment for that week. When you do the search every week you need to fill out the Search Information Form available online (see point 9 next).

(9) Remember this: For your Research Report (located here:

www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/leonpsy17/g17research.html

you will need to fill out records of your weekly searching using a Form. This will serve as your data for the Research Report. The Form is to be copied from this file:

www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/leonpsy17/forms.html

Paste the form into your Word processor and save it as forms.doc
Now you need to have both the Word processor and your browser open at the same time. Type in the answers on the Form. One part is for the beginning of your session, another for the middle, another for the end. Just follow the instructions. It only takes a few minutes each time.

Repeat the process with each week's search. Open the file you saved as forms.doc and copy and paste the Form again at the end of the file. Fill this out in the search session. Save the file. In this way you will accumulate all the Forms in one big file. Each Form is the record of one search session (usually per week).

When you are ready to do your Research Report you will have all your data in this one file. You can then analyze it and make conclusions.
