1) Uploading means sending a file from your computer or disk to the "server" computer that publishes it to the whole World Wide Web. The file is sent through an application called FTP which you must install on your computer--or else, use any of the lab computers on campus. To upload a file you also need the address of the "server" computer, as well as a password. You can delete any file you upload. You can upload as often as you want when you want to make changes to your file. Once you upload a file, your document is published and anyone in the world can read it.
2) When you start the FTP application you get a dialog box where you need to type in three pieces of information:
information to type in 409a class
Monday409b class
Tuesday459 class
ThursdayHost address: www.soc.hawaii.edu www.soc.hawaii.edu www.soc.hawaii.edu Login ID: 409af2003 409bf2003 459f2003 Password: Note: the password will be given out by the instructor in class
3) Once you are logged in, give the Make New Directory or Folder command. This will create a new folder that is your own. The name of the folder must be your last name or your Pseudonym. Do not uses spaces in folder names or file names.
4) Double click the folder you've created. You're now inside your folder (it's empty of course). This is your own Web home or official address. This is where you publish all your work on the Web by uploading it to this folder.
5) You should know the Web address of your class directory in which your folder is located:
409a (Monday): www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2003/
409b (Tuesday): www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409bf2003/
459 (Thursday): www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/459f2003/
In the address, the last slash means your class folder.
For example, if you are in the Monday class and your last name is Jones, then the address of your own folder will be:
And your home page file called home.htm will have this Web address:
Once you upload a file be sure to check it with your Web browser. Go to the address of your own folder as indicated above and click on your folder. You will see the file you uploaded -- click on it. If you notice anything you want to change, go back to your word processor and edit the file. Save it again as a Web Page. Now upload it again. It will automatically replace the older version. Now go your address again with your Web browser and check the document (be sure to press the Refresh button on your Web browser!!!). Repeat this process as often as needed.
WARNING: Do not delete or alter other people's files and folders! Do not give out the class password to anyone!
LIFE SAVER 1: Always keep 2 copies of all your files in different places for safety (e.g., your hard drive and a diskette).
LIFE SAVER 2: Always keep 2 copies of all your files in different places for safety (e.g., your hard drive and a diskette).
Note: FTP software allows you to make new folders (or "directories"), to delete folders and files, and to rename them.
