FTP Uploading Instructions
G21,
Fall 2004, University of Hawaii
Dr. Leon James,
Instructor
1) Uploading means sending the copy of a file from your computer or disk to the "server" computer that publishes it to the whole World Wide Web. Your file is sent through an application called FTP ("File Transfer Protocol") which you must obtain and install on your computer--or else, use any of the lab computers on campus. Instructions for how to get your FTP software appear below.
To upload a file you also need the address of the "server" computer, as well as a password. The FTP software also allows you to create a new folder for yourself and to delete or replace or rename any file you uploaded. You can upload as often as you want in order to make changes to your files and folder. Once you upload a file, your document is published and anyone in the world can read it on the Web.
After logging in the server (using the address and password), you create your own folder, and you upload all files into your folder. You can do this from any computer at any time 24 hours a day. The computer must be connected to the Internet in order to be able to upload files to a server.
2) When you start the FTP application you get a dialog box where you need to type in three pieces of information:
information you need 409a class
Monday409b class
Tuesday459 class
ThursdayHost address: www.soc.hawaii.edu www.soc.hawaii.edu www.soc.hawaii.edu Login ID: 409af2004 409bf2004 459f2004 Password: Note: the password will be given out by the instructor in each class
3) Once you are logged in, you will see the folders of your classmates that they have already created (unless you're the first!). Now give the command: Make New Directory or Folder (this will vary with the software application you are using). This will create a new folder that is your own. It will ask you to give a name to the folder. The name of the folder must be your last name or your approved Pseudonym. Important: Do not uses spaces in folder names or file names. Use only lower case letters (no capitals).
4) Once you create the folder, you will see it on one side of the dialog box of the FTP software. Now double click the folder you've created. You're now inside your folder (it's empty of course). This is your own Web home or official address. This is where you publish all your work on the Web by uploading it to this folder.
5) You should know the Web address of your class directory in which your folder is located:
409a (Monday): www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2004/
409b (Tuesday): www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409bf2004/
459 (Thursday): www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/459f2004/
For example, if you are in the Monday class and your last name is Jones, then the address of your own folder will be:
www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2004/jones/
And your home page file called home.htm will have this Web address:
www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2004/jones/home.htm
And the address of your first report will be:
www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2004/jones/409a-g21-report1.htm
Note: Before you can see your own folder at www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2004/jones/ you need to upload two files to your folder. Look for the 2 files in the class folder. They are called:
_message and _WSDirIndex.css
First download these two files to your computer with your FTP software. Then upload them into your own folder. Be sure you are in your own folder when you give the uploading command. Now your will be able to see your own directory.
Note that even without being able to see your own directory you can always see your home page if you type its address.
You can create all your files in your word processor. Then give the Save As... command. A dialog box appears asking you to type in the file name (see instructions for Report 1 and Report 2). Click on the select button where it allows you to choose the type of file to save it as (the default is .doc type). Select the type of file format "Web Page". This will save your file in the correct format to upload on the Web. Now you can upload this file using the FTP software application. Do not upload .doc files. Only Web HTML type text files are allowed.
Note: Your file may contain special fonts or images, as most Web pages do. When your save your file as a Web page, your word processor saves all the images in one folder and it names that folder the same name as the file, so you can recognize it. When you upload the file, the application normally uploads the folder along with it. Check in the FTP uploading window to make sure that this sub-folder appears next to your file (in your own folder). If you don't see it, you need to upload that folder (or the image files separately) so it appears next to your file. When you check your file on the Web, all the images should show normally just as they show in your word processor. When a browser shows your file, it also looks for the images in your folder and places them in the document.
Once you upload a file be sure to check it with your Web browser. Go to the address of your own folder as indicated above and click on your file. Look at it. If you notice anything you want to change, go back to your word processor and edit the file. Save it again as a Web Page. Do not forget to save it after each change or the changes will not show up in the uploaded file. Now upload it again. It will automatically replace the older version. Now go to your address again with your Web browser and check the document -- be sure to press the Refresh button on your Web browser or else the changes won't show up.
Repeat this process as often as needed.
WARNING:
LIFE SAVER: Always keep 2 copies of all your files in different places for safety (e.g., your hard drive and a CD or Zip disk).
How to Get FTP Software for your
computer
so you can upload your files
Note: The UH UNIX server with your hawaii.edu email service requires secure FTP called SSH. But the Social Sciences Server we are using for this class does not take secure SSH. It takes regular FTP only.
Here is a site that offers free downloads for FTP
applications for Windows operating systems:
www.internet-soft.com/download.htm
1) Download the program called FTP Commander and run it. It will install itself.
2) Start the program. Under the Connection Menu Select Connect to Server
3) Fill in the dialog box:
Name: soc or any name will do so you can recognize it
FTP Server: www.soc.hawaii.edu
User ID: 409af2004 or 409bf2004 or 459f2004 depending on your class
Password: (use the password given out in your class)
Click Save (next time you login you will not need to type in the info again)
Within a second or two you will be logged in. You can see this on the right hand side of the window. It should show the folders of the other students, unless you happen to be the first in class to create a folder. Click on MakeDir (make directory). It will let you name the folder. Use only your last name for the folder's name (all lower case letters, no spaces). As soon as you click OK, you will see your new folder on the right hand window. This means you have successfully created a folder of your own on the Web. Anyone can now see whatever files you upload into this folder. Double click your folder and you'll see what's in it. At first nothing, of course, until you upload files into this folder.
Make sure you are in your own folder before you upload any files. All sorts of bad things happen when you upload files into some other student's folder. Note also you can select any file, and click either Delete or Rename. Be sure you never delete another student's folder or file!! You can do anything in your own folder, but stay out of the folder of others to avoid any mistakes or accidents.
Look at the left window. Find a file on your hard drive or diskette. Check to see you're still in your own folder. Your name should be showing on the top filed in the right window. Select the file on your computer and drag it into the right window (or click the arrow in the center of the screen). You will now see your file in the right window. This file can now be seen on the Web. Check it out with your browser (see above for instructions on this).
In order to use this application remember that you're dragging files from your computer to the server computer (uploading), or vice versa (downloading). Also, remember that to do something you want to select a file then look around the screen to find the command you need -- e.g., Delete, Rename, connect, disconnect, etc. After you save your login address information, it should appear on the right window when you start the application. You select the name (soc or whatever name you gave it) and click on connect.
The University of Hawaii ITS service online also has a free
downloadable application:
www.hawaii.edu/help/software/pc/wsftp.html
I tried the following FTP application they offer called FTP Navigator, and it is easy to use, and free: www.vista.ru/2inter.htm
For the Mac operating systems, Fetch is an easy
to use free FTP application:
www.fetchsoftworks.com/
There are also many commercial FTP applications
that cost around $40. Just go to google.com and type in FTP software. I use one
called SecureFX which allows for regular FTP as well as Secure SSH:
vandyke.com/download/securefx/index.html
