PSYCHOLOGY 409a, 409b, 459
FTP Uploading Instructions

G24, Spring 2006, University of Hawaii
Dr. Leon James, Instructor

1) Uploading means sending the copy of a file from your computer or disk to the "server" computer that publishes it to the whole World Wide Web. To upload a file you need the address of the "server" computer, as well as a password to login. Once you are logged in, you can create a new folder for yourself, with your last name on it. You upload all your files into this folder with your name on it. You can also delete or replace or rename any file you uploaded. You can upload as often as you want in order to make changes to your files and folder. Once you upload a file, your document is published and anyone in the world can read it on the Web. After you upload a file, you need to look at it with your Web Browser to make sure it look the way you want it.

After logging in the server (using the address and password), you give the command to create your own folder, and you upload all files into your folder. You can do this from any computer at any time 24 hours a day. The computer must be connected to the Internet in order to be able to upload files to a server.

2) These are the three pieces of information you must have:

information you need 409a class
Monday
409b class
Tuesday
459 class
Thursday
Host address:    ftp://www.soc.hawaii.edu/
Login ID: 409as2006 409bs2006 459s2006
Password: (the password will be given out by the instructor in each class)

3) Once you are logged in, you will see the folders of your classmates that they have already created (unless you're the first!). Now give the command: Make New Directory or Folder (this will vary with the software application you are using). This will create a new folder that is your own. It will ask you to give a name to the folder. The name of the folder must be your last name (or your approved Pseudonym). Important: Do not uses spaces in folder names or file names. Use only lower case letters (no capitals). Check the name of the folder you created: does it conform to what is required? If not, give the Rename Folder Command, and change it.

4) Once you create the folder, you will see it listed on the screen. Now double click the folder you've created. You're now inside your folder (it's empty of course). This is your own Web home or official address. This is where you publish all your work on the Web by uploading it to this folder.

5) You should know the Web address of your class directory in which your folder is located:

409a (Monday):  www.soc.hawaii.edu/leon/409as2006
409b (Tuesday):  www.soc.hawaii.edu/leon/409bs2006
459 (Thursday):  www.soc.hawaii.edu/leon/459s2006

For example, if you are in the Monday class and your last name is Smith, then the address of your own folder will be:

www.soc.hawaii.edu/leon/409as2006/smith/

And your home page file called smith-home.htm will have this Web address:

www.soc.hawaii.edu/leon/409as2006/smith/smith-home.htm

And the address of your first report will be:

            www.soc.hawaii.edu/eon/409af2005/smith/smith-409a-g24-report1.htm

Important:  Do not use capital letters (upper case) in any file name or Web address.

Note: You must do the following before you can see the files in your own folder with your Web browser:

Before you can see your own folder at www.soc.hawaii.edu/eon/409as2006/smith/ (if your name is smith),  you need to upload two specific directory type files to your folder in order to enable this feature. Otherwise you get a 404 Not Found error Message in your browser when you try to see your folder directory.  So in order to prevent that, you must first upload the two required files into your folder. Look for these two files in the overall class folder, where you first log in and before you click on your own folder.  Besides the folders of the other students, you will also see these two files, not in any folder. They are called:

_message
and
_WSDirIndex.css

First download these two files to your computer with your FTP software by selecting the two files and giving the download command. Then upload them from your computer into your own folder on the server. Be sure you are in your own folder when you give the uploading command or else the file you upload will go into some other student's folder or in the general class folder. You can tell which folder you are in by looking in the dialog box where the folder name is given. After uploading these two files, check your folder with the Web browser and you will be able to see your own directory when you go to its Web address. Use your Web browser to go to your folder to look at it.

It is required that you put these two files in your own folder. It is used by the instructor and other students to look at your directory

You can create all your files in your usual word processor (or other application such as Front Page, etc.). Then give the Save As... command. A dialog box appears asking you to type in the file name, which always must end in .htm  After typing in the file name, click on the "Save as type" selection button (the default is "Word document"). Select save as a "Web Page (filtered)". This will save your file on your computer in the correct html format needed for uploading on the Web. Once the file is saved as a Web page format, you can upload this file using the FTP procedures.

Do not upload .doc files. Only Web .htm type files are allowed. If you uploaded a .doc file by mistake, be sure to delete it from your folder.

Note: Your document may contain special fonts or images, as most Web pages do. When your save your file as a "Web page (filtered)", your word processor saves all the images in a new folder and it names that folder the same name as the file, so you can recognize it. For example, if your smith-home.htm has images, it will create a new folder called smith-home_files which will contain the image files. You can double click this folder to see the files listed there. You need to upload this folder in addition to your file. After uploading into your own folder, you should be able to see your file as well as this folder by the same name as your file. Now when you look at your document on the Web with your Web browser, all the images should show normally just as they show in your word processor. When a browser shows your file, it also looks for the images in that sub- folder and places them in the document. If that folder is not uploaded, the file will show an empty box where the image is supposed to be.

Once you upload a file be sure to always check it with your Web browser. Make this into a required routine as part of the uploading process. With your Web browser, go to the address of your own folder as indicated above and click on your file. Look at it. If you notice anything you want to change, go back to your word processor and edit the file. Give the Save command again. Do not forget to save it after each change or the changes will not show up in the uploaded file. Now upload it again. It will automatically replace the older version. Now go to your address again with your Web browser and check the document -- be sure to press the Refresh button on your Web browser or else the changes might not show up.

Repeat this process as often as needed.

Now create your Home Page in your word processor file and name it lastname-home.htm Do not use other file names. Do not forget the last name. Do not use upper case letters. Do not use spaces in the file names. The minimum on your home page must be

WARNING:

LIFE SAVER ADVICE:

Always keep 2 copies of all your files in different places for safety (e.g., your hard drive and a CD or Zip disk or flash drive).

Now here are the two methods for uploading.
It is your preference which one you choose.

Method 1:
How to use your Web Browser Internet Explorer
for creating your FTP folder and uploading files into it

For a PC

1) Type the FTP server address into the address window of your Web browser or click on the address below:
            ftp://www.soc.hawaii.edu/

The slash at the end of the address is required. Note that ftp:// is required. It will not work if you leave it out.

Troubleshooting Note: If you get a 404 Not Found Error Message after typing in the ftp address, then just click in the address window until your cursor shows blinking following the address. When the cursor is blinking, hit return. This will take you to Step 2.

2) You will get a dialog box on the screen called FTP Folder Error. Click OK, and there is left a blank screen.

3) Under the File Menu, select Login As. You get a dialog box. Type in:

Click Log On.

Now you can give the New... Folder command under the File Menu. Name it your last name (all lower case letters).

For a Mac

4) You should now see the class folder and all the student folders there. If you are the first to login, the screen will not show any student folders. But you will see the two files you are supposed to install in your folder:

_message
and
_WSDirIndex.css

5) Under the File Menu, select New, Folder. The new folder will show on the screen and you are given the opportunity to type in the name of the folder. This name must be your last name or approved psudonym. Use only lower case letters and no spaces, periods, hyphens, or slashes.

6) Now click on your own folder. You get a new screen, that is of course blank because your folder is still empty with no files in it.

7) Switch to your desktop. Find the folder where your file is (report or outline or images). Select the file you want to upload. Give the Copy command (right click mouse).

8) Switch to the Web browser. The screen is still blank. Now give the Paste Command (right click mouse). Your file will now be uploaded (it takes just a few seonds). Now you can see the file on your Web browser screen.

9) Click on your file and view it. Test all the links, the formatting, font, and the appearance.

10) To correct or edit: Go to your desktop. Open the file on your computer using your word processor or whatever application you used to create the file. Switch to the Web browser and see what needs to be edited. Switch to your word processor and do the corrections.

11) Give the Save command.

12) Upload the corrected file using the same procedure as before. It will automatically replace the old copy.

13) If anything needs changing, switch back to your word processor and make the changes.

14) Give the Save command.

15) Upload the file and view it in your browser (make sure you click the Refresh button).

16) Repeat the process as often as you wish until you get the file to look exactly what you want.

Warning: Do not use background colors for page and table Properties. Only white background should be used for all documents.

Method 2:
How to Get FTP Software for your computer
so you can upload your files

Note: The UH UNIX server with your hawaii.edu email service requires secure FTP called SSH. But the Social Sciences Server we are using for this class does not take secure SSH. It takes regular FTP only.

Here is a site that offers free downloads for FTP applications for Windows operating systems:
www.internet-soft.com/download.htm

1) Download the program called FTP Commander and run it. It will install itself.

2) Start the program. Under the Connection Menu Select Connect to Server

3) Fill in the dialog box:

Within a second or two you will be logged in. You can see this on the right hand side of the window. It should show the folders of the other students, unless you happen to be the first in class to create a folder. Click on MkDir (make directory). It will let you name the folder. Use only your last name for the folder's name (all lower case letters, no spaces). As soon as you click OK, you will see your new folder on the right hand window. This means you have successfully created a folder of your own on the Web. Anyone can now see whatever files you upload into this folder. Double click your folder and you'll see what's in it. At first nothing, of course, until you upload files into this folder.

Make sure you are in your own folder before you upload any files. All sorts of bad things happen when you upload files into some other student's folder. Note also you can select any file, and click either Delete or Rename. Be sure you never delete another student's folder or file!! You can do anything in your own folder, but stay out of the folder of others to avoid any mistakes or accidents.

Look at the left window. Find a file on your hard drive or diskette. Check to see you're still in your own folder. Your name should be showing on the top filed in the right window. Select the file on your computer and drag it into the right window (or click the arrow in the center of the screen). You will now see your file in the right window. This file can now be seen on the Web. Check it out with your browser (see above for instructions on this).

In order to use this application remember that you're dragging files from your computer to the server computer (uploading), or vice versa (downloading). Also, remember that to do something you want to select a file then look around the screen to find the command you need -- e.g., Delete, Rename, connect, disconnect, etc. After you save your login address information, it should appear on the right window when you start the application. You select the name (soc or whatever name you gave it) and click on connect.

The University of Hawaii ITS service online also has a free downloadable application:
www.hawaii.edu/help/software/pc/wsftp.html

I tried the following FTP application they offer called FTP Navigator, and it is easy to use, and free:            www.vista.ru/2inter.htm

For the Mac operating systems, Fetch is an easy to use free FTP application:
www.fetchsoftworks.com/

There are also many commercial FTP applications that cost around $40. Just go to google.com and type in FTP software. I use one called SecureFX which allows for regular FTP as well as Secure SSH:
vandyke.com/download/securefx/index.html
