Instructions for the Report on
Gender Differences in Driving

Before anything: Bookmark this address because you'll need to visit places, then come back here. Be sure to read through the whole instructions two or three times before you start any part of it!!
Note: Before you proceed, please check the instructions for your generations.html file and your newsgroups.html file on how to format the various sections of this report. The instructions there also apply here.

This report must have the file name of "report1.html" or "report2.html" depending on which order it was done--due dates announced in class), and must have the following main heading:

Gender Differences in Driving:
xxx
Note: The xxx means you need to add your own sub-heading to reflect your theme or approach.

Reminder: The ** tell you that this should be a separate section, with a tagged sub-title that is listed in the Table of Contents as a link.

_____ 1) **Take a look at Ms. Lucey's (G6) report on gender differences in driving. Summarize and link to her.

_____ 2) **Read these email postings on gender differences in driving written by G7 students, then answer the question.

Well I dont think that gender has a lot to do with aggressive driving? as we have discussed in class the study that someone did that says that women are more aggerrsive drivers. I dont think that this study is right. it could have been biased by the way that people answered the questions. I think that term is self actulization. the males might have wanted to make themselves look better. I think that a study will just have to genderless. unless a set of questions can be developed that will account for the differenes that are afforded to each gender. because in certin areas women are more truthful then men, but in other men are more truthful. well that I just my views on the matter.

As we have discussed in class, the people you don't expect to be aggressive behind the wheel are the ones you most need to be concerned about. I suppose that men are more aggressive;however, women are not the sweet non-aggressive creatures some perceive. I read in the sunday paper that women are increasingly becoming more aggressive behind the wheel.

MaryElizabeth Pacheco (G7) wrote:
As I have mentioned in an earlier reply, I have not come across much research specifying the gender behind the wheel. I only assumed that because of social norms and characteristic of the male gender, that most aggressive driving is committed by the male gender. I too am interested in the cases where women are responsible. I will start to search the web and its newsgroups. I recommend these student do the same if they haven't alreasy.

Is there much of a difference between genders when referring to aggressive driving? I thought women drove as bad as men did. :) Or did I get my facts crossed?

Demographics, I think are not as important as treating this problem as a whole. Instead of why men drive more aggressively than women, we should think about why people drive aggressively. By questioning the difference between men and women we are not trying to find a solution in my opinion, but instead just looking for more why's.

Web visitor Brisaacs wrote (November 1997):

I hate to say this but it is usually the people of ethnic backgrounds, women, and older people that can not drive.

I think that this person has a few deep rooted problems that he has to deal with before he can tackle the topic of road rage. Let me see what is this man's problems well I gather from his e-mail that he is a racist, a sexist and he discriminates against the elderly. Did I leave anything out? I don't think that this man can see past his own blind vision to see anything else, so it would be the case that he is a very aggersive driver that is trying to defend his way of driving. I wouldn't doubt that he cuts people off or shows that finger on a regular basis. He should really go to some anger management classes or some form of therapy.

_____ 2) **Summarize what they're talking about in this exchange. How many separate issues are mentioned and what is said under each? How do you react? State your thoughts and feelings on each of the issues raised. End the section with a review of your own history of beliefs about gender differences among drivers. Try to relate it to your childhood socialization--including, family, neighborhood, media, reference group, and societal norms and stereotypes. Here is an article on gender issues that might help you think about the issues.

_____ 3) **Search Usenet and the Web (do BOTH!) for places where people discuss gender differences in driving. Search on

driving drivers women mothers female girls
Summarize your findings and link to those that are available as links (use copy/paste to illustrate what they say).

_____ 4) **Search a journal database like ERIC or Uncover. Both are available through your Web browser. Find 10 references to articles on gender differences in driving. List them using APA style formatting. To each, add whatever information you have, if any, besides the citation itself.

Note: For APA style citation, see my publications list.

_____ 5) **Search the CSS engine and Site Indexes for anything on gender and driving in the Online Generational Curriculum, or, browse through the generations in traffic psychology. Summarize and link to those you find.

_____ 6) **Now consult our Rothe textbook: where can you fit gender and driving among its topics? Discuss and give page references. See also what we say in class about this--consult your notes.

_____ 7) **Take a look at how other students in your class have done this report (when the drafts are posted). In a separate section with its own tagged sub-title, describe your impressions and reactions. How does their report compare with yours in
(a) content, (b) approach, and (c) presentation.
Note: hurry up and post your draft of this report so others can complete this part of it!! Please email the class when your report is first posted.

_____ 8) **What are your suggestions for future generations who can study this report and are interested in going further with it? Recommend some directions to take, especially how to take the topic deeper. Review what you have done, what others in class have done, put it together and suggest how to go further. See your notes from lecture discussions on this, including class email discussions.

_____ 9) Add a centered h1 heading, calling the document:
Gender Differences in Driving:
xxx

_____ 10) Put this in your [title] field: FN, LN, G8/Spring 1998, Psychology 459, Gender Differences in Driving: xxx

_____ 11) Place a Table of Contents at the top of the document with links to all the tagged sub-titles (see **).

_____ Note: Students often forget this item--but it is required: The first item in the Table of Contents MUST be called Instructions for this Report and it must be a live link to this document which is:
../../leonj/leonpsy8/g8r2gender459.html

_____ 12) Be sure you add a Navigation Table and e-mail button at the bottom of the document.

_____ 13) Using your web browser, check your document screen by screen: no screen should be made of just one paragraph (i.e., no paragraph should exceed one screen full--it's too hard to read that way!)

_____ 14) Spell check your document before uploading!!

_____ 15) Check the visibility of your text: patterned backgrounds are not allowed. Darker colors are not allowed. White bgcolor is always excellent, especially if you vary the font face, color, and size to enhance visibility and emphasis (no blinking text allowed). Remember: your text looks different in different browsers and computers, so you need to experiment and ask others. You may also use graphic enhancers such as color bars, color dots, icons. However, animated icons are a problem if they distract attention from the text. Using the Table tag in html allows easy control over the color of each column and the placement of text on the screen. See this example for how to change the color of fonts. See this student's effective use of varied font faces, colors, and sizes.

_____ 16) Check the way your document loads after it contains everything. How long does it take? Does text appear on the screen while one waits, or is it blank? Slow loads and blank screens are not allowed, so you must choose graphics that are low in memory size!
