Instructions for the Report on
Driver Alert--Issue 2

Before anything: Bookmark this address because you'll need to visit places, then come back here. Be sure to read through the whole instructions two or three times before you start any part of it!!

Note: This report can be done in a team of 2 to 3 students!

Note: This report is to be called report1.html or report2.hml, depending on the order in which it was done. Each team member writes their own report, except for the magazine issue which is a group product.

_____ 1) **First, take a look at Driver Alert online magazine, Issue 1 and give an outline of it, describing your reactions to the online magazine's
(a) content
(b) structure
(c) appearance.

_____ 2) **For this section each team member will have the same outline. Make an outline for the new issue you're going to create and present it in class for student reactions and comments. You also need to discuss proposals in our email discussions. Have your outline approved in class by Dr. James. Your outline should cover content, structure, and appearance (in other words: layout, images, topic of text, proposed source or writer).

Note: Other people's graphics cannot be used without written permission (email them with your request). It might be best to create your own graphics using a graphics program, or by hand then scanning it in.

Note: Here's a message written by the editor and creator of Issue 1, Mary Ford, who offered to be avaialble to you by e-mail, should you need her help or advice:
Dr. James:
Your area of expertise, traffic psychology, is the hottest issue and most pressing topic right now. My husband told me that he heard on the news yesterday that traffic accidents are predicted as the number three killer of adults in just 10 years (right behind heart disease). I'd personally like to learn more about this, because it hits home with me. I'm realizing that our culture isn't nurturing -- as Americans, we're trained to criticize, to try to get ahead, to look out for number one.

I think what you're doing is incredibly important, because you're delving into the psychology behind the road rage phenomena and you're doing something about it.

As you know, Mr. Traffic has some excellent topics on his site (I really like his writing); yesterday, I read his "What's new" and then went to his "index" and there were many topics there which a motorist would find useful -- how to avoid getting your car stolen or carjacked, etc. and Stephanie Faul, Communication Director for the AAA Foundation For Traffic Safety, has expertise in timely topics. The AAAFTS was formed to research the issues which most likely will affect motorists. I'll review my notes from an interview I did with Chris Johnson and Stephanie Faul; they predicted that smaller vehicles , like scooters will become an issue. Stephanie pooh-poohed automated (computerized) vehicle systems and automated magnetic highways as a ridiculous and untenable idea, while Kenny Morse (Mr. Traffic) said that automated systems were "the future" and already being tested in his area.

For research, I suggest searching the fresh news articles sites, like Dogpile Search Engine (and then click on the search news sites selection before you do your search). The Dogpile allows you to search ExciteNews, CNN News, and other news sites simultaneously.

I had it easier than your students because I could just hop on the Metro subway and in 15 minutes I was in D.C. and able to talk with the organizations which could give me all the research I wanted - NHTSA, government organizations and AAAFTS.

I think it is important to have a masthead which allows people to get in touch with you about the articles. When you go to Issue 2, of course you'll want your own masthead.

Ciao! (which is my version of "Keep the Aloha Spirit!"). Please keep in touch -- you've really been uplifting in your Aloha Spirit. Mary

Dr. James wrote back:
Hi Mary, thanks for offering to be available to the team that's going to work on Issue 2 of Driver Alert! At least I'm hoping I'll find 2 or 3 students willing and able to work on the project. I'll keep you informed. And thanks for the tips!

_____ 3) Only one of the team members will create a new directory inside your own directory, and you name the new directory "alert2" You upload all files for the magazine into this alert2 directory. After putting up your draft issue, email the class to go look and give their suggestions. Remind them to send their reactions through the class list so all could see it and react to the reactions!

_____ 4) **As an individual team member, describe the story of this issue (be sure to link to it), as you see it from your own unique perspective:
(a) how you contributed as a team member and how it got put together;
(b) what you went through individually;
(c) how the class reacted to the draft pages, in so far as you could tell;
(d) how you feel about the whole thing now;
(e) what suggestions you have for future generations working on subsequent issues.
