Searching Engine Week 11:
Comparing WebCrawler and Lycos
In this weeks team report I decided to type in my name into two
different search engines and find out the differences between the two.
The two search engines that I used were Lycos.
The first search engine that I used was the WebCrawler. I typed my
whole name (Reynilda Cortez). There were no
documents found under the query "Reynilda Cortez". Well I did not expect
it to find someting since my first name is not very common. So I decided
to type in my last name (Cortez). WebCrawler found 75 documents. I found
that the WebCrawler was not that helpful, because it gave me just a list
of documents and not any information about it. As I looked down the list
I noticed that the first document was the only link that had the word
Cortez in it. I decided to look at the other documents to see if there
were an relation with the word Cortez. I pressed Triple Heart Ranch.
This homepage showed was advertising their bunkhouses for hunting
season. The only time the word Cortez is mentioned is when they are
explaing where the Triple Heart Ranch is located.
Then I went back to the list of document and pressed on Las Vegas Restaurants.
when I pressed it, it gave me a list of Restaurants in Las Vegas with
phone numbers. It
took me a long time before I found Cortez. Then finally I found it.
There was a restaurant there
called Cortez Room (Gold Coast).
I didn't find the WebCrawler to be exciting so I choose to explore
Lycos. I did the same thing I typed my first and last
name. I was so excitied my name was in there. It was the first one on the
list. The first document was a link to my home page and the second
document was a link to the students homepage for Generation 2. I was so
happy to see it there in
the list. Atleast I know that someone can find me through Lycos.
I really like this search engine, it gave a Abstract about what the
link is about. I noticed that I needed to write down an abstract of my
homepage. How do I do that? The other thing that I liked about Lycos is
that it highlights the word that I am looking for, in contrast to
WebCrawler I had to search high and low to find the query "Cortez".
As I browsed through that list I noticed that they had a lot of links
to the Sea of Cortez and the County of Cortez in Colorado. I also noticed
that the list that I got from WebCralwer were on the Lycos list too.
The only different is that it had a brief summary about it.
Well overall, I enjoyed using Lycos instead of WebCrawler because I
had a much better time with it. I like to read about the link before I
connect to it. By reading the given information it helps me save some time
because I do not have to link on to a home page that I do not find
interesting.
