Searching Engine Week 9: Comparing CUI and Lycos
Are you wondering what search engines I have been exploring this
week? Well, I've looked through a lot and I found one to be very
interesting to me. It is called the Webmart's Favorite Search
Engines. It has a list of eight search engines. They are CUI, EINet
Galaxy, InfoSeek, Lycos,Rockwell, Starting Point, Web Crawler, and Yahoo.
I decided to explore CUI and Lycos.
The first search engine that I searched was CUI. I entered the word
Cats. For some reason the search was not working. I
typed the word in again. I
could see that the red light on the stop button was still on , so I thought
that it must be trying to connect to
the host, but within a couple of mintues it stopped and nothing happened.
So I changed my word to animals. The same thing happened, but this time I
knew what I was doing
wrong. CUI did a search on Cats but I didn't see it. CUI's home page
did not change, that's why I thought that nothing happened. The
information about Cats were on the bottom of the Home Page. Boy, do I
feel like a dumb, dumb! There were six subjects about Cats, I chose
Treat of the month Club for
Cats and Dogs. I thought that this home page was really cute. Each
month a dog or a cat recieves a box of treats. The boxes are decorated
according to seasons, or your pet's birthday.
The next search engine that I started to explore was Lycos. Lycos gives you a choice between
entering a word that you would like to search for or it it gives you a
list of subjects that you wish to look at. I decided to type the word
Cats in again. I wanted to see if there is a difference in the way CUI
and Lycos worked when trying to find a certain subject. I was
overwhelemed to see that
Lycos had atleast 5598 documents that matched the word Cats. One of the
titles caught my eye it was called Fat Cats Web Page.
This page had nothing to do with our feline friends. Instead there was a
picture of The Tennessee Fat Cats, which is a group of musicians. Well,
I wasn't to satisfied with the information from the Fat Cats Web so I
decided go back and choose something else. There was one titled
Both information can be helpful in some ways, but I found that
Lycos was the most helpful. It contained numerous subjects about Cats.
Personally I would use Lycos over CUI because it gives more slecetions
about a certain subject. Well that's only my opinion, maybe you'll find
something that you like about CUI.
