Reaction to Generation One Cybercommunity: Part
Two
In week eight we were assigned to read the reports form Generation One again. This time we had to analyze it more. I read the reports of Carol Almaraz and Diane Beauchemin. I chose these two students because they're experience with this class was similar to mines.
When I read Carol's first report I was very impressed to see
that she was a very busy lady. Carol is not just a regular student. She
is a
fulltime student, a fulltime mother of two boys and holds a fulltime job.
Can you believe it? Knowing that information about her blew me away. How
could she have
worked, cared for her children and studied? I'm just so amazed that
she stuck with this class because it is so time consuming. How did she
manage her time?
I noticed that in her report she talks about sensorimotor
behavior, affective behavior and cognitive behavior. Generation One
assignment was much more different than ours. It seem that they had to
talk about their experience while working on the computer. For
example, in the section about sensorimotor Carol mentions about her
accuracy with her personal computer. She says that she is familiar with
the keyboard but it does not imply accuracy. I have that same problem.
I sometimes think that I am familiar with my keyboard but I think that
it is obvious that I am not because of all of the typos that I have
done.
In the affective behavior section Carol says that she was
very excitied
to get into this class, but later that excitment turned into
frustration. I think that everyone had that same feeling. As always it is
difficult for everyone to start off in
this class, but as time goes by the feeling of success get stronger.
I can tell that everyone had a hard time, because students would
ask a lot of questions in the first few week of the semester. Now that we
are in our eighth week a few questions asked.
In the cognitive behavior section Carol mentioned about cusing at the computer and throwing it out every time something went wrong. Yup, thats how I felt too. Although, we could not really do that it was fun to think about it.The frustion of not succeeding built up every time the computer would not cooperate. I always blamed it on the computer when actually most of the mistakes was because of me. I guess that's why we have to recognize our fossilized error so that we can over come it.
One paragraph that I thought was very helpful was on the subject
about eye strain. I have notice that my eyes feel kinda weird when I
have been on the computer for atleast four hours. Carol surggest that every
ten or fifteen mintues you should look elsewhere for about thirty seconds
or so. This should relieve the stress that you put on your eyes. I will
surely try this when I start to feel my eye getting weak.
Diane's report had a little more humor in it. It was fun and
easy to read. I really ejoyed reading the list of things to do in a
elevator. I noticed that Diane and the rest
of the student from Generation One left a lot of
links to their classmates. The links were similar to the subject that they were
talking about. I guess that this was one of there assignments.
Diane was up front about how she felt about certain assginments
and search engines. I liked reading her reports because she gives some
points that will be useful to me and other people. She mention
about how she likes to use NetScape to get through Webcrawler, because
when she tries it from Dr. James page it takes to long to load up.
While
searching through NetScape she too get's carried away with other pages.
I always have that problem. Evertime I try to look for a subject for my
team report I end up looking at different things. For instance, just now
I was trying to read her report when she says that her favorite document
was The Really Big
Button Tha Doesn't Do Anything, I just had to look at. Then the
links on that page took me futher. Finally, I realized that I was
running out of time and had to finish this report. Well, I guess this
is one of my fossilized error that I will have a hard time over
coming.
I started to read her week ten report. She had no idea on how to employ graphics on to her homepage. But later she searched through Dr. James Home Page and looked at his sources. I thought that was a good idea beacuse I do that too. Having the sources on Netscape is very helpful. If it was not accessibly to us we would have an even harder time trying to beautify our homepage.
According to my self-assessment rating it seems like the task was
not very difficult. Carol and Diane had a total of
15 week reports. I did not have any negative emotion towards this
weeks assignment. I think all of my negative emotions were pointing
towards my two midterms coming up this week. I enjoyed doing this weeks
assignment because I found it to be very informative. It contained
information that will be helpful for me. Some of the task that were
assigned to Generation One was a different for ours.
For example, Carol
explored veronica and gopher jewles, but had links to Linda Wong. I
found
out the while in veronica you can choose among several Universities to
search form and they are suppose to be similar. Linda mentioned that the
connection took very long. For gopher jewles this focused on location
information by subject. I am glad that I read through their reports
because it helped gave me more options on search facilities.
Overall I really enjoyed reading Carol and Diane's report. Besides talking about the assigned task they always mentioned about their feelings. Carol mentions stress, excitment, frustration and success. For Diane she mention crying, swearing, and obsession. How can one class create so much different feeling like these? Well, Dr.James class can surely do it. By reading both of their reports it gave me a little idea of what I should expect when I plan to explore the thing that they did. For example, Generation One exxplored veronica and gopher. If I need to know about it I can just read their report and it will tell what is its purposes. I am really glad that I read thier reports because I was happy to see that they both finished this class with out any major problems. I hope that's how it will end for me.
