Week 12

For this week, I decided to utilize the most basic search engine on the net to see what type of hits I would get in comparison to the previous searches. I used Infoseek for the first time on the topic of steroids by going about the usual routine-- typing in the search, then running it. Infoseek returned numerous links on the topic of steroids which to my surprise was more than I could handle! It was a big difference from the previous search engines, where those would only retrieve a few links.

I tried the first links called Steroid prevention, but was led to nothing but a documentless page. I then went back to the listing of links and clicked onto a link called the Steraloids home page. Steraloids is a company that has been supplying the scientific community with hormones and steroids for over 40 years. The company also claims to have over 3000 types of steroids and hormones in stock. This manufacturer collects and refines many types of steroids, and even has a listing on the document of some examples that they carry. Most of them had scientific names, but the one I could understand was one called anabolic steroids.

The second search engine I utilized was Deja news. I wanted to see what people would say about steroids, so I typed in the query, and got another massive listing of links. Interested to see what I could find, I clicked on to one called "rec.sport.football." It begins with a guy talking about steroids in sports and how he believes that all sports should test for steroids. The second person answers the first, yet fails to mention anything about steroids. His only concerns are for the Dallas Cowboys, and how they will get to the super bowl with ease.

In all, I was fascinated with the Deja news search engine. It so interesting to see the psychology of how and why people like to put their thoughts on the net and get feed back from it. Yet I believe that majority of the time the information gets altered, and people tend to go on a totally different tangent than what was originally being discussed.
