Today was not a very good day to be in the clic lab. First of all it was VERY hot and humid, and second, my computer kept getting errors. I think that I must have bad luck, Karma, or some kind of negative force in the clic lab. I just keep getting terrible experiences there. Seems as if the problems that I encounter there with their computers are endless, to the point that it's normal and anticipated that I am going to run into trouble. Perhaps I should start frequenting Porteus instead. Of all the times that I have been there(Porteus), I have never had any trouble.
As far as the completion of the tasks went, I was able to get half of it done. Beginning with the tasks of sending a document to myself my means of e-mail, I thought it would be appropriate to try to send myself documents from generation I of the Psychology 459 class, being that it is my assignment to get documents from those files to do my Psychology 459 paper. In essence, I was killing two birds with one stone-completing one assignment for two classes. Learning how to send documents to myself that we have to know for PSY 409, and sending documents to my e-mail address for 459. As I clicked on to the send mail command, I suddenly got the reply that the document was too long, and that it the acceptance for mailing was a 30,000 character cutoff. I went ahead and sent the documents of "Rushing in Traffic" anyway. To make sure that I did everything correct, I wanted to send one more document to my e-mail address. I decided to send Shane Akagi's notes to my address on the same topic of "Rushing in Traffic."
After minimizing Netscape on the windows screen, I went to the UHUNIX terminal to call up pine. At this point in time I figured it was all or nothing. I either got all of the documents that I sent, or none of them. As I got into pine, I went to check my messages and found all the documents that I had sent were received! I was happy that the documents were there, yet I wanted to find a way to make sure that the portions of the specific document were there. Unfortunately, some of the portions of the documents that I wanted were at the bottom half, and subsequently gotten cut off. I'll probably have to ask you in our next class period about how to get specific portions of a specific document.
The next subtask was the easiest for this week. It was to leave a message on someone's homepage which I did on yours. I just told you that I'm in both of your classes and that I hope to do well this semester. I hope you got it.
"Lacunae" was the word for the next subtasks that I was supposed to accomplish. Truthfully, I was very confused with the next subtasks that we were supposed to do. I have many questions as to the process of exporting a pine message to a UHUNIX document and downloading it to a personal diskette. Would this be the same as publishing a report on the world wide web? Is there a chance that I might send the documents to the wrong place?
It's pretty hard to ride on the information highway when you don't know how to drive! I had absolutely no idea of how to use the ftp, and was literally trying to navigate my way through the process. The help option was inadequate, in the fact that I couldn't pinpoint the solutions to my BIG problems. At this point, I was feeling very "lacunae," and very frustrated. I didn't know what to do, whom to ask. The heat didn't help the situation also.
I then went back to the CSS server and tried to figure out how to do this.
I got into the www but was stuck when I tried to call up my files. My computer kept getting a syntax error and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. I couldn't ask none of the attendants because none of them were around, yet I wasn't surprised.
The subtasks were different in the degree of difficulty. The first two were easy, The second two were next to impossible for me. The biggest fossilized error I had was to keep going back to Sinclair, where bad experiences are their middle name. As far as my progression went, it was barely minimal. The only solution I can think of is to see either you or Kevin Bogan for help. I think it would have made a world of difference if someone was there to help me. I guess I'll have to make an appointment with either you or him, or go to the Lab at Porteus on Thursday which I always do anyway.
In general, I hope to be able to get the hang of this in the near future. I know that this is VERY important to learn, and want to know this material like the back of my hand. Yet as of now, I am in dire need of help. I still consider myself a beginner at this, and am anticipating that I am going to need future help also.
