Wouldn't you like to be a psycho, too?
I actually decided to major in psychology because I noticed that all
the books I read for enjoyment were by psychologists. I had taken only
Psych 100 and Psych 170 in Freshman Seminar format and I really liked to
two classes, but it was Psych 170 that really made me want to major in
psychology. I liked the close interaction between students and the self
introspection and self discovery involved in the class. Unfortunately, I
was misguided. While I thought that a major in psychology would lead me
to more small, discussion-type classes, I was somehwat disappointed to
find mainly large lecture classes.
Although I do not regret majoring in psychology, I wish I had known that
my classes would mostly be in a lecture format. So, to all prospective
psychology majors: if you like the anonymity of lecture classes, this is
the major for you.
To those starting out as psychology majors, a good class to start off
with (besides Psy 100) is Psy 260: Psychology of Personality. This class
will introduce you to all the major theories and theorists of psychology,
including Fred, Skinner, Piaget, and Maslow. It's a great general
overview. A secon excellent class to take is Psy 402: History of
Psychology. This class will synthesize all that you have learned about
psychology over the years and will give you the big picture.
Other than these two classes, I briefly go over my thoughts about the
other psychology classes I've taken in the "Specific Comments" section.
I hope they'll be useful to you in helping you choose your classes. Or
for those who have taken these classes, I'd love to hear your thoughts
about them.
