Week 1 Report for Health Related Internet

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Homepage

I was doing the assigned task of the week, going through each tab at the top of the page, when I came to Netsearch. Under "netsearch", I clicked on the first blue words toward the top of the page -- "Infoseek Search". This led me to some major topic ar eas under which I could explore. These topic areas, listed under "Cool Sites", included information on topics ranging from such vital areas as Finance, News, Career, and Weather, to more leisurely activities, such as Sports, Entertainment, and Shopping. There was also a topic which was important and relevant to our class -- Net Resources -- but because that is not my topic area, I did not look into it. Instead, I looked under Health. Listed under Health were the major topics of Fitness, General Medici ne, Specific Illnesses, and Government Sources, and each major topic had several subtopics listed under it.

CDC

Under Government Sources, I clicked on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). After seeing the movie "Outbreak" recently, the topi c had great appeal for me. Clicking on CDC opened another listing of topic areas, including "About the CDC", Traveler's health, statistics about various disease prevalence, and Diseases, Health Risks, Prevention Guidelines and Strategies. I clicked on the latter and received a li st of various diseases and general categories of health and ailments. I was interested in the Hantavirus, so I clicked on that one, and under this I rejected looking at Laboratory guidelines and Telephone numbers for public health contacts in each state, in favor of "Cause, prevalence, and prevention information", thus, I finally accessed the information that I had wanted to see.

Hanta Virus

There was a formal tone to the essay written about the Hantavirus, but it was in layman's terms, so it was easily readable, and it was generally informative about how one catches the Hantavirus, the origin of the Hantavirus, previous cases of people who contracted the Hantavirus, and prevention strategies. I found the contents of the essay to be interesting and I've very glad that I found it because I'd like to go back when I have more time and read about the other diseases listed under there.

Societal Implications

I think this information is invaluable to have on the internet to educate people about such deadly viruses so that perhaps their spread can be prevented. I'm not sure how this relates to social psychology except that perhaps if people start seeing this information on the internet, they can spread the information to their friends and more people will become informed in the subject of infectious diseases.
