Week 15 summary
This week on the Net I looked through Searching Gopherspace. From here I went into Jughead and typed in marriage and my results were pretty good. However, when I clicked onto a link I did not like the results. These links were to conversations people have had over the internet on a certain topic, most of them were reports on ceratin universities that offers degrees in education, psychology and sociology. Gopher Menu. This was not what I wanted to read. So I abandoned my search and tried to look for a new search engine.
Well, I finally found an interesting article on ST. Jerome and his preachings on marriage in the Gopher Search called Alex. This is an interesting article concerning his views on marriage and what the proper conducts are for a husband and wife, but especially for the wife. Here is an example: " a wife is the only thing that cannot be shown before she is married, for fear she may not give satisfaction. Our gaze must always be directed to her face, and we must always praise her beauty: if you look at another woman, she thinks that she is out of favour. ... If a woman be fair, she soon finds lovers; if she be ugly, it is easy to be wanton." This vile piece of writing condems women and encourages men to treat women with no respect or consideration since it is women who according to this article "but friends, and servants who are under the obligation of benefits received, are better able to wait upon us in sickness than a wife who makes us responsible for her tears (she will sell you enough to make a deluge for the hope of a legacy); who boasts of her anxiety, yet drives her sick husband to the distraction of despair." This article certainly shows the view men had at this time. It is sad that some where in this time there are men who believe that women are not their equal and are responsible for men's down fall no matter what it may be.
Well this all that I could search for since I am having no luck finding anything worth reporting on or finding the right search engines to give me new topics to read. Overall, this week was really slow. Although I had the time to search for my topics I could not find the right article to report on. The only interesting find was that article on Jerome.
