Well, we've finally come to the end of the semester and I hope that it went well for everyone who is going to college. It has been a very trying and tiring semester for me and I hope to survive long enough to enjoy Christmas.
This weeks task was to write a paper about "technophobia." For those of you who don't know what that is, it is a fear of technology. Because this class is primarily computer and Internet based, we face this fear all the time. This final paper will tell you about some of the fears have and some of the ways that able to overcome them. Well, most of them....
FEARS.
- How do I make good HTML documents?
- Will the computer crash on me?
- How do I save documents?
- I don't know how to use this program.
- Oh no! I've deleted the wrong file.
SOLUTIONS.
- Try to gather up as much information as you can. Read books and/or magazines, Surf the 'net for info, and ask a lot of questions. Another good way to overcomr this fear is to look at other people's source documents. When you look at the source documents you can see how they created their final product and then you can "borrow" their knowledge and try to incorporate it into your own website.
- I think that this fear encompasses everyone from the beginner all the way to the experts. This kind of fear is like the fear of the unknown because you'll never know when it will happen. (Hopefully never. Knock Knock.) I don't really know if there is a solution to this fear. You just have to remember to take every precaution necessary in order to minimize the amount of information that you might lose. Save often, either to a hard or floppy disk, and take notes if you have the time or if it's not too long. However, if the unfortunate does happen to you, don't panic. Restart the computer or ask someone to check it for you.
- I found out the hard way that there are basically two different methods of saving documents. One is the standard "save" option and the other is the "save as" option. The "save" option simply saves the document or file to a predetermined section. The bad thing about this is that there is no title and you might not know where it's going to be placed. So for new files, the "save as" option is always better because it allows you to choose the title, something that you can easily remember, and it allows you to put it where you want it.
- The answer to this fear is just like the answer to the first one. Read, ask quesions, search for answers, and practice, practice, practice....
- The best way to overcome this fear is to make a back-up copy of all of your important documents and/or files. it's a little time consuming and tedious but when you do delete the wrong file, you'll wish that you had backed it up. I've done that to many papers over the course of my college career so I try to backup everything that I can. ( When I remember to. Oops...)
These are the main fears that I have had to overcome in order to move ahead and advance and expand my knowledge of the computer and it's many systems and programs. There are probably many more types of technophobia out there and if and when I do face it I hope that my experiences from this class will help me to get through it without a great deal of stress and negative emotions.
