Section 3.
To me, this week's tasks were the most difficult to do, so far. Again I had to try to send myself something from Netscape and again, just like last week, it did not work. There must be something wrong with me or my e-mail account. I even went into Pine to check up on my e-mail address. I copied it down, and tried it again and guess what....... No dice. HELP!!!!!I was also not really sure about what it was exactly that you wanted us to do with Pine and UNIX. I did not know what you meant by, "export a Pine message to a UNIX document", but I tried to do the rest.
I left an e-mail message on Dan
Delaney's Home Page. His homepage is
the FAQ line for the National Midnight Star which is the official Rush fan club. I
looked at the bottom of his Home Page, found and clicked on his e-mail address
which is , Dan@pdh.com, and
then sent him my question which
was whether or not Hawaii would be having a Rush concert anytime soon. His reply was that their
latest tour had just ended so unless something
unexpected happens I would have to wait until the next tour. I am seriously bummed.
I tried to use fetch but I could not seem to get that command to work. It might be the computer that I was using because I was doing it at home and it seems like only certain programs work here.
In the Clic lab I was able ftp my files from UNIX to the CSS server but the rtftohtml still will not work for me.
It seems as though I am having a great deal of difficulty with the more advanced areas of using the computer communication aspects. I can't seem to grasp the required knowledge that is necessary in order to complete or even comprehend some of the required tasks. My technophobia is beginning to increase at an alarming rate and it seems like there may be no end in sight. I do believe that I am following the directions as closely and as precisely as possible but the results have not come. Even now, the PPP program that was given to me by the computing center seems to be going haywire. Maybe it really is time to spend the money and get myself a much better system in order to try to keep up with the more sophisticated systems that we are using.
If I am able to fully grasp the knowledge that I need in order to use all of the different types of software that we are presently associated with, I really do believe that it will be extremely useful, not only for this class and my Psy. 459, but in my future endeavors as well.
As the semester rolls on, I hope to get a fairly good grasp on the different types of tasks that are thrust upon us. As I learn more about the different systems and what makes them tick, I hope that my own personal perception of each will become more in focus.
I think that a good part of trying to understand the steps involved in accomplishing these tasks is asking questions. I do not think that I have been asking enough questions in order to fulfill my need for knowledge.
It seems as though my satisfaction with the computer systems is still on the decline. If not for the courage of the fearless crew (Sorry Gilligan.) this minnow would be lost. This skipper, Dr. James, and his little buddy, Kevin Bogan, have always been there to try to help us through this hurricane of confusion. If it were not for them and for the ease of use of the Internet, I think that this rating would be quite a bit lower than the rating that is shown above. Thanks guys.
Is this a trick question or what? Although I am constantly running into roadblocks of every kind and turning every which way but loose, I am trying as hard as I can to try to complete the assigned tasks, or at least until frustration, sleep depravation or both has taken over. I think that what I really need, besides help, is a lot more time to spend on the computer. It is very hard to make time while going to school, working 30-40 hours a week, and using a home computer that is extremely slow or sometimes only gives me garbled messages when I try to log into the University's computer system. I also need some time for rest and/or recreation. Is there a class that I can take that specializes in time management? Just kidding, I think.
The differences in the sub-tasks were fairly substantial. Some things were fairly easy, send an e-mail message to someone's Home Page, some were hard, using ftp, some were very hard, trying to mail a document to yourself from Netscape, and some just felt impossible, export a Pine message to a UNIX document and using rtftohtml.
While trying to do this week's tasks, it felt like I made millions of errors. That includes repeating a few more than once thinking that a different computer might make a difference. I tried the difficult tasks at home on a 386, at Clic on the DX2, and on the MAC. I got the same results on all three which was not very much.
What I really have to do is to stop being so stubborn and ask a lot more questions. I like to think that if given time, I can eventually figure out how to do things. I have to use more of the help resources that are at my disposal.
The only progression I seem to see, at this moment anyway, seems to be actually a downward trend. It seems like I can do less of the required tasks as they get harder and my understanding of the steps involved also seems to decline
I could probably list both my conclusion and my resolutions all into one short paragraph. I need to seek help in doing some of the tasks that I do not seem to understand. With some of the technology that is around, doing it yourself is just not going to cut it.
I also need to get a faster, more up to date computer to use at home. This way I will not have to wait to use the Clic lab computers. (Unless it is one of their new ones.)
