WEEK 14

This week was not terribly exciting. In fact it wasn't terribly anything. Try as I might I couldn't think of anything interesting or different to look for and had to refer back to the syllabus to figure out a topic. What I did end up with wasn't much, so bear with me. The subject I did a search on was (collective inhale in anticipation) online courses (everyone out with the bad air). To look for the aforementioned subject, I use d the search engines Excite and Lycos.

All right I'll cut to the chase, the first thing I looked into was the Excite stuff, I found a document called GENESIS Online Courses. Allright I checked it out and only one link seemed to be working, called Mastering Cyberspace, it talked about all the lovely course work and quizzes without going into too much detail (or maybe I didn't) but it costs $149 Canadian for the course. Pret ty straight forward writing (standard ad copy). Learning is part of social psychology, isn't it? Probably, but it's all about education here folks.

Ok, on to the Lycos junk, which proved to be a little more interesting. LC Online. This was not too bad, it was run by Louisiana College. They pretty much just listed the classes they offered over the internet which numbered about 10 or so. The interesting thing is you could get a degree thr ough the net. Sort of another alternative for people, just like Mind Extension University on television, or the ICS Correspondence Schools. These courses also make use of taped classes and over the net and through e-mail information dissemination. In teresting deal but I wonder how they proctor the tests to make sure no ones cheating? Oh well (enough cynicism out of me) sounds cool, a BA in only 8 years (according to them) and you're good to go. I wonder if the graduation ceremony is virtual, you now real-time chat with the Dean of the school, a nice gif image of your diploma, etc. Maybe you get to march to the mailbox and shake the mailman's hand (he might look at you funny if you wait for the mail in a cap and gown). Anyway, interesting concept, that's enough out of me for now. Until next time, thanks for calling, thanks for listening and most of all thanks for being you>.
