Overall, This week's task was not difficult at all: it was time consuming! I had no negative emotions while trying to beautify my home page. The value of making my home page aesthetically pleasing is that it may cause people who are just surfing the internet to stop and take a look at my page. I think that the internet allows the user so many options of things you can do to make the page nice that it is truly endless. The countless varieties.
First, there are the images. Pictures, pictures, pictures. Pictures galore. It could take weeks to try and select the appropriate images for your home page. There are so many factors involved. Are you going for a certain theme: color, characters, etc. Once I looked through a few of the countless images I could get through the internet, I made a few selections to save. Even from my selection of images, I do not know what I really want to use. I have a few Disney pictures on my page, but if I find something better, I will change it. Another factor to consider when selecting images, because they take the longest to load, is the size of the image. I did not want to select anything that was too large and took too long to load. Since I get impatient when I have to wait a long time for something to load, I tried to keep the waiting to a minimum. On my computer, which is a 386 and only has a 9600 modem it took about twenty seconds to load. Of course, from school it was much faster since there is a direct connection.
Another type of image is the background. Again, there are so many possibilities, it is hard to make a selection. Backgrounds are not only patterns on the background, but colors also. I consider changing the background color as a background because it takes just as long to load. For my background selection, I looked at Lori Morita's week #5 team report. She has a link to a page with all types of backgrounds. This is a quick and easy way to change the background. Another way to get backgrounds is to look at other pages and copy it from there. This takes a lot of TIME.
Then there are the little things that you can change. Putting bullets on a list of items, centering the text, making text bold, italicized, or changing the size of the font. All of these things seem insignificant, but they do make a home page more appealing to the eye. There are still ways that I want to change the positioning of text on my home page, but I'm not quite sure how I want to do it yet. I could look at a countless number of home pages and still not decide on how I would like mine. Of course, in between, I'll change things, but then I see a way it can be better.
For this week's task, I did not notice any fossilized errors. Because the main thing was to look through many home pages, the task did not involve anything difficult. There were also no repeated lapses and I did not feel lacunae. I just set myself down at my desk, and put aside a few hours. I could get so wrapped up looking at pictures, as I said in my week #5 report. I think that I is so neat that there are so many pictures I could select. Just at the click of a button, I could save the image. This is where the task from week #2 came in handy. That is when we had to learn how to save an image to a diskette.
I notice that as I keep looking at more and more home pages I get a better idea of how I want my home page to look. In time, I think that I will get closer and closer to my ideal home page. At this moment, I can not say exactly how I want my page to look.
My resolution is to keep on getting more information and tips on beautifying my home page. Through the semester I plan to keep on changing it until it is beautiful to me.
