Team 6: Week 3 Report

Since I did some internet surfing last week, I decided to stick with it and see what I could find. I was wiped out by the overwhelming response to yet another search on surfing. This time I found several links that went beyond just the pure pleasure of wave riding. In fact it got into some hazy waters.

The Blue Room, really wasn't blue...instead I found it to be an organization that supports a free internet. Their slogan is " Educate Don't Legislate " Surprise surprise, this is not all that the room contains. It also has links to topics like: * Surf conditions in Hawaii and abroad, * Bouy Reports, * Save Our Surf, * Ocean Police and of course * Surf Shops. The link to ocean police interested me, I thought maybe there would be reports on accidents, safety or traffic, but there weren't. Instead it was more of a directory to environmental groups and causes concerned about the well being of the ocean. Although it wasn't what I had expected, it was great! Knowing and caring about your environment is vital to safety. Whether you're on the roads or out in the surf you need to be aware of your surroundings. It's all a part of being a cautious and reformed driver. (surfer) These organizations are very much like SADD, MADD or car pool advocates. They are there to make us more aware of the consequences of mistreating our environment, others and ourselves.

Other links that I took some time to look at were GOES infrared imagery of the Hawaiian Islands, reports on current weather conditions straight from NOAA, and surf observations, all of this right here in Hawaii. The links were courtesy of SOEST (School of Ocean and Earth Science Technology) right at the University of Hawaii. Isn't that neat? Being aware of weather conditions is very important to a surfer, it allows him/her to mentally prepare himself/herself for the waves. This is just like when people listen to the weather. If it is raining, traffic slows down and people have to be mentally prepared for the consequences. Surfing is the same way, if there is a swell on the south shore with clean sets coming in, one can expect more people out there. That means more competition for a wave and a totally different mindset. No convoys on the open seas please.

Bottom line is...our environment is our life. Care for it and it will care for you.

Surf on dude! Slip me a message!
