Team 6: Week 5 Report

My surfing days have come and gone, and now I must, move along. From the surfing world I flee, to a sport I thought would be, lots of fun and educational too, come on lets go, one paddle, two.

Yes, indeed my topic this week is none other than paddling. Unfortunately though it wasn't quite what I was looking for. I did a general Info Seek Search on paddling and got link after link, article after article on kayaking. The only page I found worthy of my time was Bruce's Paddling Page. In it he discusses all types of paddling, provides answers to FAQ's and even has photographs.(those are my personal favorite...pictures really do say a thousand words.)

One type of paddling category was Whitewater Paddling. What a totally dangerous sport. It's basically like white water rafting with a kayak.Bruce's FAQ's section is broken down into different categories, for example: river ratings, canoes, kayaks, rafts, safety, terms and why do we do this. All of these sections are very clear and informative. He has done a great deal of work on this homepage and the information he provides is straight to the point. The layout is basic short phrases, not a long winded article where you have to pick out the important facts. Knowing all of this info is very important because while you're out there, anything could come in your way. Obstacles in the water are endless, rocks coming out of nowhere, speeding up of the current, other boats along the river etc. The conditions while in white water are worse than on any highways, yet the skill it takes to steer one of these floating trees is tremendous. Not even half of the people with drivers license in the United States would be able to handle the challenge of Whitewater Paddling.

On his homepage there was another section on Sea Kayaking and it's FAQ's. This is yet another means in which to travel on the ocean. In this link there are seven different sections. They are just as concise as those in the whitewater paddling section. He covers learning how to kayak, equipment, hypothermia, history etc. I found the area of equipment interesting. He listed the basic necessity, a safety vest. It's really weird but this lit up a bulb in my head. These vests are very similar to our seat belts and air bags. They all are a means of protection... to prevent severe physical harm.

Can you imagine anything and everything has some correlation to driving and or traffic psychology? Cool!
