Attack of the Jellyfish
Here I am in the waters of Jellyfish Lake in Palau. This was the most
interesting snorkel I have ever done and probably will ever do.
The lake is located in one of the many small islands that make up the
Republic of Belau. Of course, you get there by boat. Once there, you
have to climb a short but steep trail. This leads you to the mouth of
the lake--where the ocean water mixes with the fresh water. You have to
snorkel out a bit in order to reach the section of the lake where the
jellyfish are in great abundance.
According to the divemaster, it all started out with some jellyfish
getting stuck in the lake. In order to survive, the jellyfish had to
evolve. Thus, they lost their ability to sting and learned to live in
freshwater. If you are ever in Palau, you have to do this snorkel, even
if you don't dive. It is quite an experience to be surrounded by
hundreds of jellyfish. You're able to touch them--you can't not touch
them because they are just everywhere.
If you're wondering about diving Jellyfish Lake, forget it. We asked the
divemaster and he said that once you go so far down, the air becomes
toxic and deadly. My advice--enjoy the snorkel. It is well worth it.
