WEEK NINE GROUP REPORT ON CAR CULTURE:

PROTECTING YOUR INVESTMENT

This week I utilized the services of the Metacrawler. With the term 'car service' launching the search, I uncovered a link entitled "Code-A-Car". Upon further investigation, I learned of a few facts about car theft and how we, as car owners, can protect our investments through other means besides noisy alarms and neon-colored 'clubs'.

On the average, there are two cars stolen every minute. Two cars have been stolen since I began this report. Imagine that. Organized car theft is responsible for billions of dollars lost every year. Two cars a minute, billions of dollars every year.

What is a car owner to do in light of these horrific facts? Have no fear...

Code-A-Car kit is here! By placing your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) permanently on your car windows, your cars value in the eyes of thieves is drastically reduced. As the value of your car in the eyes of thieves is slashed, your peace of mind is increased. Not only do you feel better about using Code-A-Car kit, but your insurance company may feel better about it, too. Many insurance companies offer comprehensive insurance discounts if you have your VIN on your car windows. Thus, by protecting your car from thieves, you save yourself the money and worry you would endure if your car were to be stolen and at the same time you get a break from your insurance fees.

What exactly makes up the Code-A-Car kit? Well, eight glass etched masks with your cars VIN are included as well as etching paste, Code-A-Car window decals to alert thieves that you are utilizing their services and are well-armed, and instructions to properly install the Code-A-Car kit.

Why, you ask, should you go out and purchase Code-A-Car kit and do it yourself when you could easily go to a local dealer and pay them to do it for you? Code-A-Car's answer to you is that the name of the game is saving yourself money from unnecessary waste while providing your car with the best protection. If you were to take your car to a local dealer, they would charge you about $90.00 per car. For the same service, you can do it yourself and all it would cost you is $19.95 per car plus $2.55 shipping! Now I ask you, which service might you opt for given the circumstances?

I think that sites such as this serve various purposes in Traffic Psychology. First, they show us that car theft is a very real problem that greatly affects all car owners. I don't know how many times I have had to return to my car because I could not recall if I had locked all the doors and was worried that something might happen to it. Can you imagine how much worry it would relieve us of if car theft did not exist? Its existence and its effects on car owners should, in my opinion, be further studied in the field of Traffic Psychology. Another purpose of a site such as this is that it recognizes the effects of car theft and offers an option to those wishing to alleviate its effects by providing greater peace of mind. Here, too, is another topic that could be explored further in Traffic Psychology--the emotions and security provided in the utilization of car protection services.

As you can see, Traffic Psychology has a whole world of possibilities and effects to explore. Check out what teammates Sharla Supnet and Jason Nakasato have uncovered for the week.
