WEEK 12 TEAM REPORT

This week, I did a search on the Metacrawler search engine. Although I'm supposed to search for FAQs, I've been having a difficult time finding any new ones. I think I've seen pretty much all of the FAQs on driving and automobiles. Also, I find most of the FAQs to be rather boring. This could be because many of the FAQs are so technical and are directed towards people who are knowledgable in cars and mechanics. Thus, I typed in speeding and got some interesting results.

The first result of my search was the speeding zone. This link was simply a page where you could link to pictures of various sports cars. The page is dedicated to "speed demons". The page also includes links to other sites of interests for speeders.

Next, I got to a site for successful speeding. This comes from the July 1994 issue Car & Driver magazine. The page basically gives tips on how to speed and get away with it. The advice includes getting a good radar detector, avoiding red high performance cars, and learning to reconize threat vehicles. I feel this article is a waste of time. I find it to be an irresponsible piece which encourages speeding. To make things worse, this article was actually published. Imagine someone writing an article on how to steal and get away with it. It would be an outrage and would probably never get published. Yet, when someone writes a similar piece on speeding, not only does it get published, but many people are probably taking the advice to heart.

The final link I checked out was an article on the effects of raising and lowering speed limits. The piece summarizes the results of the research done. This confirmed what previous research has suggested. This is that lowering or raising speed limits have little or no effect on drivers. People feel the posted speed limits are unrealistic. They have their own idea about what the speed limit should be and drive accordingly.

Any comments?
