Today as I was looking out through one of the windows from Gateway Hall, I discovered the Manoa range and St. Louis Height are really an uplifting sight. Much of it came from the sky, the cloud, and the light which made up the background of this beautiful painting. Consider some of the congested areas in Hong Kong where people live in, my view outside of my dormitory window is worth a fortune. There must be something wonderful that attract us to the scenery of nature. It's sort of like human's preference for symmetry rather than irregular patterns. People's psychological state of mind is much healthier here when compared with those who live in high density of Hong Kong and in the lack of urban areas in Macau and Canton.

I was living in a tiny fishing village on the north coast of Buru Island in eastern Indonesia. Buru is a very mystical and enchanting island; both stunning in its beauty and dangerously wild in the spirit of the island, its traditions, and its timeless but obscure history. I was out fishing with one of my Buru friends one night, taking a break from my survey work in the area. I had been there for over a month, just myself, moving from village to village while surveying the entire north coast for archaeological sites. An old Indonesian friend and I had met up in a remote village in which he had relatives. We had borrowed a dugout canoe and paddled out past the reef one night to do some line fishing. The water glowed and shimmered like nothing I had ever seen before. It was alive all the way to the ocean floor. The stars seemed as if they were in the water itself.

I remember laying back in the canoe and watching the stars while my friend had caught a fish and was singing an Ambonese tune. It was timeless. Then, on the horizon, the moon started hauling itself out of the water, enormous... changing hues with every passing moment. The glow formed a floating road of light along the surface of the water, as if you could just get out of the boat and walk right over to the moon. Then, it seemed as if the moon just pulled itself out of the water and rested on the surface for a brief moment, letting itself dry. It took up the whole sky at that moment. The water lit up even more. And with the sky full of stars, and the moon climbing from the horizon, and a million jewels glittering in the sea, it felt as if I was inside an enormous crystal chandelier. Magic, it was real magic.

Between the ages of 20 to 40 I was a seeker for spiritual feelings. I read a variety of sources in psychology, meditation, consciousness, zen, kaballah, hinduism, mysticism, occult, theosophy, psychic powers, and the like. I found nothing at all in any of these. Nothing spiritual, that is. Then one day I came across the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg. At last I was able to understand clearly what the spiritual is.

The answer was known to me all along: the spiritual is the mental world reified! In other words, people's thoughts and feelings (mental world) constitutes the spiritual world. This is obvious to me now when I reflect upon the nature of thoughts and feelings -- immaterial, without mass or space, therefore spiritual. Swedenborg is fascinating and unique because he is the only scientist in recorded history who was able to visit the spiritual world and verify that it is the same as the mental world. In other words, when we pass on ("die"), we shed the physical body, and our mind or spirit, emerges intact, solid, healthy, and beautiful -- emerges in its own mental body within the spiritual world where everyone else is. Swedenborg goes on to describe the life people are leading as immortal spirits in the spiritual world.

In Big Island, as I have been there several times. The retreat in KMC was a great experience. It was the first time that I saw the volcano. The area was very beautiful, and I was grateful that God has made this world so beautiful at the first place, and let us live in here.

I always have a spiritual experience when viewing the nature. It's so lovely and peaceful. I just feel good, and everything seems right and at harmony. Art also gives me a spiritual feeling. The last one that gave me one was a beautiful song bird which was about to flutter away from a bamboo. The brush stroke was erratic which captured the movement of the song bird. It looked like the artist captured the bird in a moment in time. The black strokes had a strong feeling against the white background. It was in a Chinese brush stroke style. The white background gave contrast, and also looking at it gave me a peace of mind. It was like a piece of eternity that kept going on and on out there. It really brought out emotions, beauty, movement, calmness, and harmony.
