Violent Contributions

Date: Sun, 3 Mar 1996 From: Amy Lam, Honolulu

I don't usually have violent thoughts about other drivers, unless when I am in a very bad mood. I remember one time when I just had an argument with my boyfriend and was on the road rushing to some place, there was a car moved like a turtle in front of me on the freeway. I could have moved to another lane, but before doing that, I was cursing that driver and was thinking that the driver shouldn't get his license since he didn't even know how to drive. Actually there was no need for me to feel like this, but that guy was irritating me so much being in front of me to slow me down.

My name is Deborah Miyasaka and I live in Honolulu. Today's date is May 6, 1996. My problem with other drivers is that some drivers are very inconsiderate and rude. Three specific examples of this are as follows. First, drivers do not signal when they want to cut into another lane or turn onto another road. Second, drivers tailgate other drivers. Third, drivers stop in the middle of the road to talk to their friends and sometimes even for no apparent reason. What do I do in these situations? I sometimes shrug it off and tell myself that it's not worth it to become upset. Besides, what will getting upset do? Will they change their behavior because I get upset? I doubt it. Sometimes I yell in the car at them to release my own frustrations, which usually helps.

All the hostility and anger that I experienced in traffic was the result of the excess baggage that it generated. On top of my school studies, I had to worry about the traffic obstacle at hand. The added stress caused me to explode and drive in an aggressive manner. Sitting in the endless line of cars, I experienced the same emotions of both the men and women who wanted to kill another driver.

I hate it when someone jumps in front of me then slows down. What compounds the anger, is when there are no cars behind me. Go figure! I hate it when cars tailgate me. I have a natural reaction to hit the brakes and watch the vehicle behind me take a nosedive. I hate it when women put their makeup on while driving! I hate it when people talk on their cellular phone, are going 20 miles per hour below the speed limit and are so into their conversation that they don't realize it, that's when they get the horn. I hate drunk drivers, I think each person caught with a DUI should loose their license for one year MANDATORY.
