MY HOMEPAGE

GENERATION 1

My travels through G2 & G1 started at the homepage of G1. Since I already had experience traveling through the generations of traffic psychology I was better prepared for this journey.

The first person I visited wasDrawing of how each generation will add to one another.I thought that it was a pretty neat representation of how big the data bases will get in the future.

The next link I clicked to was theFrequently Asked Questions link. There was one question that people seem to ask me the most which is answered in that file was "How do I get my files from uhunix account to my www account?" Kevin did a good job on explaining how. THis helped me a lot when I forgot or was somehow lost.Next I read over his lab reports which were mainly concerned with how many hours he put in and how he seemed to be addicted to the net. I never really thought that it could happen to me, but I seem to be online for hours on end just surfing the internet. I'm usually doing it for a purpose like looking for relevant links but I always seem to get side tracked. I mean there are so many neat and interesting data bases out there. I was talking to my girlfriend the other day about how I wanted a recipe for a certain kind of pasta and she said that I should go and buy a pasta cookbook and then a light bulb went off inside my head. I said,"Why don't I just down load it from the internet because I bet someone out in cyberspace has the recipe. She was amazed that I could actually do that. Its funny how much is out there and how little people really know about it.

Overall I didn't think that he organized his homepage too well. He had too many links without really organizing them and throwing them under a few sub-headings which I believe he should have.I almost forgot to mention that his down to the bottom link is not working. I would like to also add that I think he should have put the G1's class picture in a seperate file accessible through a link and not put it up in the front of the page like that, it only cluters and takes up space not to mention download time. However you can see through his lab reports that he was trying and that makes all the difference.

The next person I visited was Kyle Fujii. The homepage of Kyle was not too appealing but it was functional. He had three different links to three different homepages. His standard homepage, his indexical homepage, and his creative homepage.I thought it was pretty neat that he actually had three homepages but after looking at all of them I feel that he should of just stuck with one; his indexical homepage.I say this because it was the most practical and I really think that a person only needs one homepage. My understanding is that the purpose of a homepage is to contain all of your files in it so a cybernaut could go back to it if he/she's lost their place. I don't know if I have the right idea but if I don't please leave me a note on the bottom. Then I started reading his weekly reports. His week 1 was funny because I remember going through the same frustrations he did with the computer terminals luckly I had some good help from the people in Keller IBM lab. Since he was from G1 I really didn't understand his computer problems because he was using lynx which I am not familliar with. The only lynks I know of are spelled with an "I" and not a "Y"

The best insight that I really got into his personality was in his little confessional titled My Hard-Headed self.In this piece he says that at times he gets frustrated because he doesn't know how to do something which is natural of course, God knows how much frustration I have experienced in the past month. The thing that doesn't make sense is that he knows he can ask for help but refuses to do so because he feels stupid for asking. I'm glad he admitted to this illogical and irrational belief that most people, like myself, fall into. It only makes sense to ask someone for help when you need it, but our illogical and irrational beliefs prevent us from doing such an easy thing. Why? My theory is an integration of both social learning and cognitive-behavioral approaches to explain why we don't ask for help even though the benefits outweigh the effort.

I believe that we learn from early on by observing others that asking for help is a sign of weakness and/or incompetence. As time goes on and this kind of behavior and maladaptive thinking persists the more harder it is to change. What needs to be done is what we call "Cognitive Restructuring." This is the basic approach used by many cognitive psychologists in therapy. How this works is that it involves changing the beliefs and thoughts that the person has that maintains the maladaptive behavior. By pointing out and analyzing the maladaptive thoughts and then replace them with adaptive ones by using positive self-talk the client learns to recognize the irrational thoughts and replace them with rational ones.Well that's my theory.Back to the report!

Well, after I read that I went on to reading the rest of his weeks but the one report I could relate to best was his week 7 titled Eye sore.Almost every time I do computer work my eyes seem to get sore but I guess anything would if you spend more than four hours at a time doing it.I guess time does seem to go by when you are engulfed into the work. Finally I looked at his week 15 piece called advice for future surfers. It started by telling the future surfers that they should drop the class before the full refund date which of course he was only joking but was really reflective of how he felt many times throughout this tough course.Luckily he came away from all this still in one piece and stuffed with computer knowledge he never had.Overall I enjoyed reading his reports because they were relatively short and straight to the point.

The next person from g1 that I visited was Jill Kaneshiro.Just like Kevin Bogan she too has a picture of her 409 class in the front of her homepage and just like Kyle Fujii she too has Three kinds of homepages. The one I thought I would like was the indexical homepage because it would be straight forward but after viewing all of them I choose to go to her standard homepage.I choose this one because it was easy to read plus it was annotated which in my opinion makes things a whole lot easier. The first thing that I noticed was her glossary. The terms in her glossary were very humourous which was an emotion that I seemed to forget I had while on this terminal for the last six hours! The term that I recognized well from class disscussion was: Boolean Logic which is the kind of logic that computers use when doing searches on search engines. My only criticism of her glossary was that it was not in alphabetical order or of any order in fact. After I looked through all her terms I decided to read her lab reports.I really enjoyed reading her lab reports and was now able to make some comments on 409's lab reports in general.

After reading her lab reports I began to see a regular behavior pattern among all the students of 409's lab reports.Every lab report I read started out with the students usually becomming very frustrated for a wide variety of things but it was mainly because of their ignorance of computers which was in the most part new to them. The pecular thing was that you could see from their writtings their joy when they accomplished or figured out a task that was giving them such problems, and with every obstacle they seem to overcome the more joy and confidence seemed to show in their writtings. The beginning of their reports are usually filled with; negativity and pesimism about their class, doubting their abilities and competence as students, and having bleek outlooks on their future in their class or even if they even had one! But as they were able to accomplish more tasks the reports were looking more positive, they seem to talk about their acheivements in great detail and joy, the reports were filled with more positive adjectives to describe their class, thier future and themselves.

From this I deducted that their beliefs really affected how they perceived the world which in turn affected thier emotions and behaviors. I know this seems as if I am coming from a radical cognitive psychological view point but it is eniment in their writtings. This data seems to really confirm the cognitive psychological view point behind behavior which is explained simply like this: How we think about a situation affects the way we act feel and act. So in the beginning the students had all these maladaptive thoughts about themselves because they were not able to accomplish certain tasks which reflected on their attitudes which was mainly poor, and their emotions which was mainly anger. But as they were accomplishing more things their beliefs about themselves changed; they believed that they were competent and able which inturn reflected on their attitudes which were looking more positive and their emotions which showed in the increasing number of positive adjectives used in their reports.I know this might seem like a long stretch of theory but I as you already know subscribe to it 100% and also one cannot rule it out!

GENERATION 2

The next place I decided to check-out wasGeneration 2.From my experience with my 459 class I really enjoyed their G2 class alot more than their G1 class but I'm sure that somewhere in the future g5 will say the samething about g4 when comparing us two.As technology gets more advanced so are the students. It scares me to think how primitive our technology today would seem ten years from now.

The first person I started with was Lori Morita.I would like to start by saying that Lori has been a GREAT deal of help for me in this class. If it wasn't for her patience with me I really don't think I would know where I would be today. So if you are reading this paper Lori, Thanks!!!On to my paper now.I would like to comment on the appearance of her homepage.I really liked her background, it gave a kind of warm feel to it and the format was really practical.I read through her reports and again I seem to favor week one on the reports.I couldn't believe that Lori, the same one that knew ever answer to all my computer questions, started her 409 class with no Knowledge of the internet and e-mail. That wasn't the only thing that suprized me it was reading how many problems she experienced and survived to this day with all that computer knowledge. It was also funny how she tried to get help from the people in the CLIC lab and they were not able to help her, I too experienced this and reacted the way she has which is just to never ask them any internet questions!

Then I went to her topical index. This is the place I seem to visit the most when I am creating new files. She really has a lot of valuable information that I think most people should take advantage of.I think the majority of my class and 459class went to her Big Ol' Color Index link in order to beautify their files.I also used her Search Engine Index a lot to do my searches for outside links.Overall I think that Lori has a very good balance of appearance and practicality. Her content in her papers were also very entertaining as they were informative. Her files are just as informative as she is in person(but by now she probably knows ten times more!)

The next person from G2 that I decided to go visit was Cynthia Yap.My first impression of her homepage was that I thought I was on the disney homepage, specifically Mickey Mouses'.It was really cute how she split up her 409 files into three boxes with mickey mouse in each.I went right into her index. When I tried to go into her "OTHER 409 STUFF" I seemed to run into problem.I couldn't get in, it kept on saying "403 FORBIDDEN" so I was unable to read those files. That was too bad because they sounded very interesting. As I tried to look through more files I began to run into this problem a lot.I think she should be notified of this because a lot of her files were not accessible. So out of frustration I decided to quit those files and try my luck in her weekly reports and those too were not accessible. At this point I felt it futile to continue looking through her files so I decided to try someone else.

The last person from g2 that I decided to look at was Curtis Nakao.I must say that I really liked the layout of his homepage. The appearance was very surfer-like so it gave the page a kind of personality.I also liked his organization of his links because they flowed down the page nicely in a uniform manner, unlike a lot of homepages I have seen which seem to clutter it up!I would also like to comment on his body background selection. It was simple yet decorative, colorful and functional.

After reading through some of his reports I happened to find his week 15 report the most interesting. It was about Home Page Architecture. The thing I like about it was the fact that he started with five basic questions about it and then went on further to explain it. I really like that kind of format, to me that shows good organization skills.Another plus was that he had many relevant links in that report that could further help you.His advice for people who want to create their own homepages is to learn as much as possible about the language. This is a very good point because if you think about it what is the purpose of language?Language is a form of communication, right? So wouldn't it be obvious to want to learn the language of the computer so you can tell it what to do and have it understand you?It would seem so to me however I didn't really think about it until now.I mean the whole time I was learning about computer commands I was really learning its' language.Pretty neat concept if you think about it.
