This report is about how I went about gathering relative information for my database in Gopher.Gopher as I understand it, and please correct me if I am wrong, is a text based internet server. In other words it is a server with mass amounts of information, especially academic, and it is only in plain text, which means no colorful backgrounds, no fancy graphics, and no neat fonts, just plain old letters. So if you think searching through gopher files is going to be really interesting, I think not since I personally like to be stimulated by color and images, especially if I have to do hours of searching. One of the search engines I will be using for gopher is called Veronica. Veronica uses what is called boolean searching which finds resources by searching for Words in Titles. Veronica does not do Full Text Searches which utilizes the string search method.

My Step-By-Step Search

The start(Lynx)

#1-----The first thing I did was click onto the telnet(e-mail) icon on my program manager menu. On the UH UNIX prompt (which is noted by its "%" at the end of its prompt) I typed "lynx".

#2-----On the top of this screen it should read "Welcome to UHINFO! University of Hawaii" The first thing I did on this screen is type the letter "o" which opened up the options menu for lynx.

#3-----This screen read "Options menu (Lynx Version 2-4-2)" The first thing I did on this screen was type the letter "u" which stands for user mode. Then I pressed the right arrow key on my keyboard. This changed the previous mode from novice to advanced after two clicks, then I pressed return. The reason for doing this was so the url address of each of the links would show, otherwise I would not where I was. After that I pressed the letter "r" to return back to the previous screen.

#4-----Now that I was back on the UHINFO screen I used the bottom facing arrow key to scroll down until I reached "Search and Explore the Online Universe"( A key to note here is that my "Bold" was right on this!) After I pressed return.

#5-----This screen read "Exploring & Searching the Web" I scrolled down until I got to the search engine Lycos.Lycos is a search engine I used t find the search engine Veronica.kind of funny how I had to use a search engine to find a search engine.

#6-----This screen read "Lycos" I then scrolled down to "find" and typed in my key word "veronica" and then pressed "enter" on the "go get it" icon.

#7-----On the top right of this screen read "lycos search: veronica" I scrolled down until I got to the "1)veronica-Index to all gopher menus by Keyboard!!!!" Then I pressed return.

#8-----On this screen it read "gopher menu" from here I tried a variety of searches.

Simplified Veronica

#1-----I scrolled down until I got to "Simplified veronica: Find Gopher MENUS only and unfortunately I had a very hard time finding anything using these search engines in Lynx so I decided to Try my luck in Netscape.

Netscape

Veronica

#1-----On netscape I decided to find Veronica while using the search engine Yahoo.

#2-----I typed in the Key word "dating" because the key words: "meeting people" "networking" "socializing" "interaction" were all coming up dry so I decided to go with "dating" since that is a great way to try meet someone. Thank God! after over 5 hours of searching I finally found a relevant link. Online Dating was the name of this topic. It was written by Amy Baranoski and it talks about how online dating has affected her life and how she met many friends through the net. Unfortunately that was the only relevant link I could find under the key word "dating" so I decided to add the word "internet" as to narrow the scope of the search, but that didn't work.

#3-----Then I heard that you can use another search engine for gopher, Jughead!

Jughead

#1-----I went back to Yahoo and decided to type in the keyword "Jughead."

#2-----No matter what keywords I typed here in Jughead I still was hitting blanks. So I tried one last attempt and I found something under the key word "dating" again but this was under a gopher server from "logic.uc.wlu.edu:3002/7". Cupids Network was it's name and it is new singles and dating information service.

#3-----Then I tried another jughead server in Utah.I entered the key word "people." I found a good file called Finding People on the Net
Cupids Network
