FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The first time I took a look at the work of past students from
classes G1 and G2 gave me a kind of a scare of what was ahead for me. I decided to
check out the work of the class that started this whole social psychology
generational madness- Class G1.
The first G1 student I visited was Jo Allen. I
was very impressed by the design the she used for the page I landed on.
Automatically I knew she was sort of religous since she had "disciple of
Jesus" as part of her heading. I decided to go right to her Weekly
Homework Assigments to see what was in store for me in the futrue. I
felt just a bit intimidated by all the work she had done for the
semester. I started to have second thought about staying in the class
but like always, I overcame that silly option. Since I don't
have any artistic skills whatsoever, I quickly tried to find an easy way
to do all the background graphics that I thought that I might have to
do. To my dismay, I found it to be even harder than I thought. I had no
idea what a link was until I saw the many links on Jo's first page. The
first impression I had on Jo Allens page kind of gave me an overall
impression on the whole class- Interesting but with a ton of work to do.
After browsing page for a good half an hour I went on to the next person.
A DIFFERENT IMPRESSION
I felt more at ease when I landed on the work of Tod Takitani. At first I was happy to see that there was a
non-artistic type just like me who made it through the class. In my
opinion, his first page looked nice since looked well organize without a
lot of busy pictures to distract ones eyes. The very first thing that
got to my attention was his
First Lab Report which is about his initial feelings, thoughts, and plans. He had about the same
initial feelings of anxiety as I did when I first sat in front of a
computer in the lab. What I liked most about all of his pages is the
simplicity he kept with the text. Unlike Jo Allen's work, there are no
graphics on any of Tod's pages. Some people might see this as laziness,
but I see it as just being a different type of person who sees and does
things a different way than the rest of the crowd that likes to follow
the flow. All his work was in a neat and organized fashion which I
hoped received high marks. It's hard enough for us first timmers, who are
just learning how to use a computer and the internet, to also learn how
to be graphically artistic.
THE PROFESSORS CHOICE
Dr. James told us to refer to some of his past classes homepages for
examples on how to do our assignments. I had the feeling that his
favorite homepage from the past was that of Kevin Bogan
since he repeatedly mentioned his name. At first, Kevin's hompage doesn't
seem like much. Suprisingly, as one scrolls down, one runs into the
class picture of "G1". I thought this was kind of neat since the two
previous homepages I looked at didn't have any such thing on their
homepages. I know very little about scanners and how they work but I knew
this was the work of one of those amazing devices. The class picture was
nice and bright with all the students looking happy. I wondered if this
picture was taken in the beginning of the semester when all the grueling
work was not yet due. I scrolled past the class picture and found that he
had many "reference" and "help" type of links. The CSS Help File
in that section was interesting. This gave me my first introduction
to some new helpful tools that I was going to need to do my work. I made
sure to make a note to make sure I good find my way back to this page. I
checked the rest of his work on all of his other pages and found that he
didn't have as much art work as his first page makes you think. I
figured that by having a scanned picture on his first page that the rest
of his pages would even be more artistic but this wasn't the case. I was
once again awed by the amount of work that he did for the class. Almost
every one of his files had pages and pages of noticable hard work.
This was the last stop of my initial journey to class G1. I give this
class a giant amount of credit being the first class to set the standards
for the rest of us. According to Dr. James, they started with absolutly
nothing and that it was a learning experience for everybody including Dr.
James himself. My initial journeys through G1 were so intimidating and
exhausting that I waited until the next day to jouney through class G2.
A FAMILIAR NAME
Since class G2 took place only a semester or two
ago, it automatically dawned to me that I should try to at least find a
homepage of someone that I knew or at least have had a class with. I was
so glad to see the name of Letitia
Lujan. I met Letitia during the second session of summer school. We
took Psy 280 (community psychology) with Dr Dale Fryxell. This class was
one of my favorite psychology classes that I have taken. I met Letitia
through some of the group discussions that took place in the class. Her
first page that I landed on was very pleasant to the eyes since it was
easy to see. She used a white background which made everythin very
legible. What I didn't know about her is that she is from the island of
Guam. This was made very evident when I notice the heading on her first
page the read "Hafa Adai". At first I didn't have a clue what that
meant, but a click to her Personal Album gave me
enough information to figure out where she was from. You can tell that
she is very proud of her family by all of the pictures that were sanned
to her personal album. There are a links to pictures of just about
everybody in her family including her boyfriends. You can also tell that
she is proud of her heritage. She is so proud that she has a Chamorro Language Lesson
Archive to enlighten everybody on the indiginous language of Guam.
Like everyone else, she had tons of work to do. I browsed through all of
the work that she had done for that class and was once again amazed at
all of the work that was done. I would dread to scroll on one of the
pages and look for the end of the page- the end was always far away.
THE "PSYCHED OUT" STUDENT
The very first thing that came to my mind when I first looked at Berna Collado's
homepage is "how in the hell does she make the title blink?" Letitia
also had a blinking title on her homepage. I came to realize that this
must have been the class that learned how to make the text blink since I
didn't see any such thing on any of G1's homepages. This is also when I
found out how to use the "view" option on the top of the netscape
browser. This was kind of a help due to the fact that I didn't have a
clue on what was going on at the beginning. I liked the background that
she used for her homepage. It has sort of a "aloha shirt print" that you
might see some tourist sporting around Waikiki. She has a very good
definition of what is Traffic
Psychology. On this same page you can find another section called The need for traffic psychology.
where she a list of reason why we need it.
