SACRED SITES AND LANDSCAPES OF THAILAND

A series of PowerPoint lectures based on photographs from travels in Thailand during the summers of 2005 and

2006 will be offered as community outreach in a course for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the Manoa

campus of the University of Hawai`i during the Spring Semester of 2007. Types of sacred sites include Buddhist

temples and monasteries, sacred trees, sacred caves, outdoor sacred images in the landscape, and spirit houses.

The sites reflect the mutually reinforcing integration of elements from Animism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and other

religions in Thai life and society. Selected videos will also be shown to provide general background and context. A

few of the instructor's especially relevant publications will be available for reading and discussion. A bibliography

will be provided for those who may wish to pursue further reading.
