The UHM Leisure Center has something for everyone

Hula, Tahitian, African drumming, guitar to sailing, the Leisure Center covers any activity students could want to do. But Director Andy Johnson is afraid that many students are not aware of this center for extra-ciricular activities located right on campus. In the Hemenway courtyard nestled between Bale and the American Savings Bank, is the Leisure Center office and Rental Center, where the boards and gear are stored and loaded from.

Nnamdi Castle, UH student and rental center employee helps students to make the most of this resource, saying that it is the cheapest place, and sometimes only place for students to rent coolers and tents to bodyboards. "Friday is the busiest day," he said, "because students go camping and stuff during the weekend."

Matt Morici, UH student from California, is impressed by the school's interest in student fun. "It is twenty dollars for a one day class, or forty for a two day class, and you are basically out here for three to four hours, and they drive you down here they have to boards ready for you," he said. Adding that it was a much better deal than the Waikiki Beach Boys, and conveniently located on campus.

websiteimageCommunity members are also invited to join class, but only students are alloweed to rent. All you will need is a valid UH student id, credit card, and a few minutes to load up your gear.

What started from a solely craft center in 1953, has become a recreational and rental center today, with a focus on complimenting the academic system at the university.

Directed under the Campus Center Board but managed by students and falculty, the Leisure Center is a place for UH and community members to kick back and have fun.
