City and County of Honolulu is starting a new green waste program in Hawaii kai and Millilani. Issues of conflict and strong support are being discussed as residents adjust to the new collection system. hawaii kai Resident Nhi Nguyen said, " It looks neat."
Some issues include lack of space for three bins and question about when designated pick ups are.
There is a strong support for the program in Hawaii Kai , and residents have given the City and County a positive response. though some are still not sure which bin is for which recyclable. some people find it easier to mimic the actions of their neighbors. Nguyen said, " I just follow the other people recycling. It looks nice, the community looks more neat."
Green bins are for green waste such as trees and plants. Blue bins are for newspaper, cans and bottles. grey bins are for refuse such as old wood or non-recycable waste.
The project will be continued for 6-12 months in Hawaii Kai and Millilani, and later the City and County plans to expand the program to other parts of the island of O'ahu.
Saturday morning pick up for bins alternate between green and blue every week at 6 o'clock.
