Recent security changes have left many students and faculty confused about the differences among security guards on campus. The following is a guide profiling the responsibilities and constraints of the various types of guards at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa.

Currently there are close to 40 Freeman guards, 30 campus security guards, four Wackenhut guards and five Pacific Security guards on duty. According to Jim Manke, vice-president for university relations, security guards' salaries come from UHM's security budget which is roughly $1.2 million.

Carolyn Tanaka, associate vice-president of external affairs, said that the Manoa campus has a larger budget for security than other UH campuses, and therefore employs more security personnel than any other campus in the system.
